    Many unsolicited credit offers & advertisements are the result of agreeing to the TOS/TOC required for banks accounts, credit cards, shopping sites, etc. That agreement provides the credit companies & business partners visibility into a customers credit file. What is not made clear - You have the ability to control your Credit files visibility with a credit freeze.
    A credit freeze changes the default configration such that only the owner can view the file. A credit freeze does not have a negative impact on your credit score.

    The big 3 credit agencies may offer alternatives to a freeze because a freeze also denies them access to your credit file. They have a vested interest in dissuading you from freezing your credit and you will be offered similar sounding alternatives. A credit freeze is the only option that restricts credit file visibility to the owner.

    If you freeze your credit file, you will have to lift that freeze when you apply for a new loan or new credit card. Lifting a credit freeze is quick and can be scheduled on advance.
