For Māori, seeing Matariki in the night sky marks the start of a new year. As winter solstice passes, a time to reflect on the year ended, and envision the year to come.

    In that spirit, a little #TechHistory ...

Hope we might get a glimpse of the cluster over the nights following, but it is winter and rainforests are cloud factories, so expectations are, errm, tempered.

  10. @matari Most of your recorded time will actually have been spent on the System.out.println command. And self-made benchmark timers are notorious for giving bad data, so I recommend JMH instead.

You're right that String.format is slower than using the + operator, but a JMH benchmark comparison would show the difference to be much greater. (It would also show that String.format allocates a bunch more bytes to the heap.)

In summary: don't use String.format for simple concatenation.

  11. I’ve chatted to friends in the Māori community about this, and depending on the iwi I gather that #Matariki is in Pipiri (the traditional one, not 新曆)—that my belief that it should be celebrated on Whiro (as our New Year) is not universal, and some wait till (O)hoata. So is this Friday’s celebration to give us a long weekend rather than wait till the actual day? Or is it a very early appearance of Matariki? And is it cool if I waited till Whiro? #Maramataka #TeAoMāori #understanding #culture

  12. I made #Matariki shortbread which is Edmond’s Shortbread (p.43) but I made a stamp showing ngā whetū ō Matariki which I then stamped onto all the shortbread.

I was very clever and mirrored the constellation #SuperGenius and then didn’t flip the stamp over which means they’re all mirrored. Oops. Not sure the kids will notice before they gobble them down.

  17. Such beautiful message for #Matariki from @violetblue 's newsletter this week:

"The three main themes that guide the celebrations are: “Remembrance – Honouring those we have lost; Celebration – Giving thanks for the present; Aspiration – Looking ahead with hope.”

I feel like for our purposes here, the remembrance aspect might be a step toward reclaiming the collective grief we’ve been denied by all of our Covid losses, and all the people we’ve lost that have gone unacknowledged, even denied. It’s like we’ve never had a minute for that, to sit and not let the memories of our loved ones be treated like car crash statistics. For celebration, I feel like we are so gaslit and dismissed that we deserve to celebrate how incredible we are to have survived this pandemic, how well we’re still taking care of ourselves by masking and vaccinating despite the odds and hate. If you’re helping in words or actions, you’re a goddamn prevention champion in my book. Aspiration is harder because hope feels like such a dwindling, finite resource. But look at us defying the anti-science hoards by building a better future, even just by putting eyes on this page and staying sharp and aware.

Stay apart, stand together, mask up, and stay strong."
