  1. In this new paper on data journeys, the authors draw on the concept of domestication to show how data are made usable at sites of reuse:
    doi.org/10.1177/03063127231212

Based on ethnographic fieldwork at two sites of biomedical research, the authors identify four dimensions to data domestication: storytelling, standardization, formatting and cultivation.
The study stresses the importance of local settings for data work, even in a global data economy.

  2. This preprint analyses how and why social science datasets are cited.
    doi.org/10.48550/arXiv.2302.08

The authors developed a typology that covers the entities being referenced, as well as the structure and function of the reference.
They demonstrate that referencing data serves various purposes beyond re-analysis of data, for example providing readers with access to data or supporting empirical arguments.

My colleague @Maxi and I from the project re3data COREF have just published the first systematic study on the topic, based on a survey among repository operators.
