Let someone else know how “crash early, crash often” contract driven development can avoid spending a third of your time in a debugger trying to solve problems caused by crash avoidance.
Bit late to submit a pitch for #PyConAU, but maybe it’s more of a Java and C# thing in any case.

We had a phenomenal response to CFP this year. Thank you to everyone who submitted a proposal to be a part of the conference in August.
It takes a lot of time and effort to get through all your awesome session submissions.
So while we take the time to review each and everyone of them, this post goes behind the scenes to explain how the program review committee works to select talks for #PyConAU 2026.

PyCon AU 2026 submissions are now closed. Thank you very much to everyone who submitted a proposal.

I thought #PyConau would be in Melbourne again this year. Actually in Brisbane, but I am going to submit a talk anyway. I suspect my chances of it being accepted are pretty low, can't hurt to try*.
I'm not a Python dev, but the Python devs I know tend to be excellent humans.
On the off chance I do get my talk accepted will need to meet up with some Queensland people in person. Be aware my comments are just as inane in person, if not more so.
*I assume being eaten by a croc in Queensland would hurt, but that only happens to like 80% of visitors.

Remember to use your scaffolding to keep students in that zone of proximal development, and *always* reflect! - Elizabeth Bacon @ the #pycon Education Summit
-
When we design instruction, we must think about what kinds of cognitive processes we want students to engage in and what kinds of authentic tasks encourage that process.
Motivate students with context, explain how the skill is really used, scaffold enough for students to complete a meaningful portion of the task, and then assess/reflect on it. - Elizabeth Bacon @ the #pycon Education Summit
-
We still have many authentic skills and practices that students will be very much expected to use as future developers, including the decomposition, using documentation, and communication! - Elizabeth Bacon @ the #pycon Education Summit
-
CS Students have always been able to copy from StackOverflow, so giving the right answer without understanding is not new. However, students are newly extra-tempted to offload cognitive work in ways that do not serve them well, and there are distractions with screens. - Elizabeth Bacon @ the #pycon Education Summit
-
We ate lunch, I'm awake, and up next at the #pycon Education Summit is Elizabeth Bacon with a talk on Scaffolding CS Activities! 🎉

Today is mostly a jet lag recovery day 😴
I went to the conference venue to pick up my badge while tutorials and sponsor talks were already running, and I already met and greeted some of the first people here.
The conference hasn’t officially started yet, but the Django/Python community atmosphere is already everywhere ✨
