  1. @xgebi I don't know of a marketplace, but I can recommend at least one indie designer and a couple other hopefully useful websites

the one indie designer I've bought (and actually sewn¹ :D ) more pattern from is scroop patterns / the dreamstress, who is not in the US (she's in NZ), and sells directly from her site
    scrooppatterns.com/
of course that's just a handful of specific looks

There is another indie I've bought something from, Liz Haywood from AU, but she sells via etsy. :(

Then there is freesewing.org/ (free as in #freeSoftWear) that aren't traditional patterns, but made-to-measure ones and work in a bit of a different way. They have published freesewing.org/blog/us-and-eu/ on the topic of getting away from the US, and are here on the fediverse.

And lastly I follow a blog (the author is in the UK) that does reviews of free patterns: many are from the websites of indie designers (other from bigger sites) and may be a good source for additional sources of patterns.

¹ they aren't a lot because I enjoy drafting my own patterns

  2. @xgebi I'm using #Helix helix-editor.com/ because it has great integration with language servers including rust-analyzer, but has completely different usage idioms. Other editors to try out would be #GnomeBuilder wiki.gnome.org/Apps/Builder or #Lapce lapce.dev/ - no idea about the current state though due to me not using them on a daily basis.

  8. Do I have sunk costs? I guess I'm done with waiting for Godot to see what's next for frontend development.

The unholy trinity of Angular, React and Vue may go away because having CSS and HTML in file is consuming too many tokens.

To be frank, I'm not sure I want to be here for it. LLMs and agents are taking the fun part out of coding. And I guess I'm Worf-type developer (youtube.com/watch?v=JbMdvywftfI).

  9. I’ve been waiting for the next big thing after react on the front end for a long time.

If LLMs and agents are it, I probably should grow up and retrain as an accountant.

  10. 🆕 post: When to start design system?

Before my current job I've been working on a design system for almost three years. At my current job I'm back to writing apps and I'm starting to have thoughts.

  11. Does anyone have a recommendation for courses, articles, whatever medium that explains how to use Xing? Deutsch ist kein Problem.

(At the moment it feels like the lesser evil compared to LinkedIn and the UI is not exactly intuitive.)

  12. So, as I’m putting my life back on track, I’m trying to figure out what to do with size of my ear plugs/tunnels.

At the moment I’m at 10mm and 8mm. In the past I’ve had goal set to 22-ish mm but I’ve also had set backs because ears got unhappy around 14mm.

If I may ask, if you have stretched earlobes, where did you decide to stop? And why?

  13. Sorry, Americans if there are fewer than two protests next week, I'll be disappointed.

    - gutted CDC
    - planned gutting of Endangered Species Act

You should be protesting like your lives depended on it because at this point they do.

  15. *sigh* only caret-color is in #caniuse, caret-shape and caret-animation aren't. It's definitely a CSS disappointment that they aren't implemented yet.

So I'll look how to add those two there tomorrow.

Unless someone beats me to it.

Next someone posts “how dare you to still visit Twitter” I’ll ask them where to get regional stuff. Not the Western European and North American.

  18. A new paper from @wu_xuebing 's lab just published @Nature
    "Noncoding translation mitigation"

    nature.com/articles/s41586-023

    Here are my thoughts:
It is a very interesting paper, and important to anyone working on #translation, particularly from #ncRNAs, but not only.
In brief, they screened short sequences originating from #lncRNA or from non coding regions ( #UTR #intron) (and #mRNA CDS as control) which they fused to GFP at the C-term and looked at GFP expression level.

  24. #Flink has largely replaced #Kafka Streams for me.

I do miss Streams... maybe I'm getting old and prone to nostalgia, or maybe I'm sad to move on because of the amount of time I spent learning Streams' quirks!

This is a better intro to how they compare than my gut gives :)

  25. “The promise of AI for engineers is getting rid of engineers.

Tools like GitHub’s Copilot write code, specs, review, and create pull requests. They create and run tests, and do so in the background while the developers engage in more productive activities, such as meetings.”
