@worldsendless @scottjenson My thoughts are actually dealing with way broader scope as you might think.
Why do we need file names and even #filesystems for user-land files?
Why do we need multiple "applications"?
And so forth.
So yes, while Scott and others try to improve the current situation with increments (which is very important!), I also think of leaving this local UI/UX optimum, throw lots of stuff away in order to reach a different optimum which is nearer to the global optimum.

#QOTO people - about leaving / people blocking QOTO etc... :ablobwave:
I'm messaging you because of mixed reasons - not all bad but it seems that many of the people included here want(ed) more as many of us have been posting about or around things - some solved but many around the Fediverse also itself.
I've personally seen how it's going too... also having talked to @freemo (many month before now and un-responded) and asking for more (even without his help directly but under his and our own watchful eyes to do *something*)... Again not all his fault and also about my wants and other people's with just social / Federation rules by others / not being blocked etc...
So I'm seeing a few more people talk about EXPORTING out and I also was thinking and why I included you all... Freemo has often done great and a stellar job in communicating with people on his instance but it was a bit patchy and did need branching out / enabling other somehow (a bit like fans running the band's website or at least helping themselves through the root / music band's website / QOTO).
Anyway I have a lot of energy still but after seeing a few comments about other people BLOCKING or similar (and my friend also creating a Mastodon.Social account and not able to see my posts) means we have to solve this somehow... maybe having two accounts? I don't know (I'm also seeking your help here).
Checking #QOTO hashtag makes some of this clear about people's intentions or direction so I hope we can crowdsource and help ourselves if Freemo is often out of communication or at least this level... or just life... We have to find a way...
Not sure about leaving totally as it's "their fault" and not all QOTO (though a lot of what I want and what any social needs is direct investment and building people in itself, not just the storage resources and Techies)...
But anyway... a few words for you all. No harm intended.
See #QOTO hashtag and see if you can help the others..,

With the rise of the lose-lose situation with the tension around censorship vs misinformation, #Humanities work -- which is centrally about critical thinking -- is more important than ever. I am privileged to straddle the boundary between Humanities and Tech as a programmer/Digital Humanities professional. For a long time the tech side has been the socially advantaged one because it lead to high-demand well-paying jobs while humanities has had an identity crisis trying to prove its worth to a public that wants to follow the money. But now, more than ever, that critical-thinking humanites education is crucial to society. These human problems that threaten our society, those poles of censorship and misinformation, are simply out of the scope of the tech thinking. But they are not going anywhere, and the only answer is to for individuals, who are the victims and the target of both censorship and misinformation, to learn those #Humanites skills.

I just changed my computer and installed guix thereon. I found that, curiously, my notification was not working. I spent the day debugging; the script itself ran the sound just fine. The permissions were legal. Finally I found a command that mentioned other earlier errors in my dunstrc file:
dunst -conf /home/ME/.config/dunst/dunstrc
WARNING: Setting notification_height in section global doesn't exist
WARNING: Setting startup_notification in section global doesn't exist
WARNING: Setting verbosity in section global doesn't existI learned that those warnings mean the setting SHOULD NOT exist, but it is (wrongly) there. Apparently that was stopping my configuration from being read. So, I commented out the misplaced settings:
# notification_height = 0 ## no more
# startup_notification = true ## no more
## verbosity = debug ## no moreThere are newer locations for those settings, but I got up and running – with my audio script being read – by commenting those out.

#TSA_tech # setting up a local version of Wordpress on Tumbleweed in 500 easy steps
For a better development experience I needed to set up Wordpress locally on my Tumbleweed machine, which was somewhat different than the Ubuntu that I brought the site from. It wasn't really 500 steps, but does have some gotchas and require some time to get right.
## Prerequisites
- Have a version of the WordPress site running somewhere on server that you can access. You need a mysqldump of its db and a copy of its complete file structure.
- `mysqldump -h host_if_not_local -P 3360 -uwordpressuser -p X > ~/X.sql`
- the port `-P` is whatever port it as served from, if not local and not default
- You will be prompted for the password of the user, which is the password from the wp-config of the site
- Have Apache, PHP, and MySQL or MariaDB running locally. You can find these in the repo with `sudo zypper search lamp`, which will show you the `lamp_server` pattern that you want. Install that.## Install the site
1. Locate the base place that you are serving locally. Mine defaulted to `/srv/www/htdocs/`.
2. Source the database into your mysql, replacing X below with the name you want for your database.
1. `cd` to the directory with `thingyoudumped.sql`
2. log into the local db with `sql`. I had to be root to log in with the privileges I needed, so I started with `sudo -i`
3. create the db and create everything you need to fill, and the priveleges Wordpress will need. `CREATE USER 'X'@'localhost' IDENTIFIED BY 'X'; CREATE DATABASE X; GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES ON X.* to 'X';`
- Note the `@'localhost'`. In modern mysql, the old `@'*'` means everything EXCEPT localhost, so you won't work with the star.
4. from the mysql prompt, `/use X` and then run `source thingyoudumped.sql` and watch it bring in all the stuff you need
3. Copy your Wordpress directory, which should be the directory containing wp-config.php, into the served place, such as `/srv/www/htdocs/`.
4. Make sure the following lines are present in your wp-config.php, where X is the name of the actual directory containing the wp-config file:
define('WP_HOME','http://localhost/X');
define('WP_SITEURL','http://localhost/X');
Note the absence of `/` at the end of those http addresses. With a `/` at the end, I spent a while debugging why I was simply being routed to my base localhost directory and not the Wordpress site. You will also need to make sure that wp-config contains working database credentials for the db you just created in step 2.3, unless you just copied the same credentials as the site had before.
## Making apache happy with .htaccess
In the same folder as your wp-config you should find a .htaccess file for the apache config that WordPress requires to make things work. It should contain something like this. My actual file had a massive section before this for WP-Rocket, but this is what is necessary.
` <IfModule mod_rewrite.c>`
` RewriteEngine On`
` RewriteBase /X/`
` RewriteRule ^index\.php$ - [L]`
` RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f`
` RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d`
` RewriteRule . /X/index.php [L]`
` </IfModule>`## configuring apache itself with default.conf
This was the biggest difference from installing locally on Ubuntu. Apache on Tumbleweed uses a different directory structure. It doesn't have the `sites-enabled` or `sites-avalailable` directories, or the `a2ensite` family of helpers. Instead, the single location I need was `/etc/apache2/default-server.conf`, which I needed to adjust to respect the htaccess of our target directory. It had a bunch of other stuff in the file, but the following is the important part for WordPress:
` DocumentRoot "/srv/www/htdocs"`
` <Directory "/srv/www/htdocs">`
` Options All`
` AllowOverride All`
` <IfModule !mod_access_compat.c>`
` Require all granted`
` </IfModule>`
` <IfModule mod_access_compat.c>`
` Order allow,deny`
` Allow from all`
` </IfModule>`
` </Directory>`
` `
` <IfModule mod_userdir.c>`
` UserDir public_html`
` Include /etc/apache2/mod_userdir.conf`
` </IfModule>`
` `
` IncludeOptional /etc/apache2/conf.d/*.conf`
` `
` IncludeOptional /etc/apache2/conf.d/apache2-manual?conf`
` ServerName 127.0.0.1`
``
``
`## Success!``After this I was up and running. There might me another step about installing a php accellerator, but I didn't have to do that on this site. It should be available from the repo if you need it.

I just read about tasty #image #compression via

Oh yeah, and those weird conversions of images to video files on Reddit -- how that works, because #VideoCompression is good!

Help please: GU_OFF ?
I'm using an unmodified Planck dropshipped keyboard. It is mostly as represented here https://raw.githubusercontent.com/qmk/qmk_firmware/refs/heads/master/keyboards/planck/keymaps/default/keymap.c with the exception that the lowest-left key is 'shift' and not 'brite', although it would be nice if it were related to my keyboard backlight. See also https://config.qmk.fm/#/planck/rev7/LAYOUT_ortho_4x12, which seems to match except that both my spacebar buttons are, for now, really just space.
My toddler mashed some buttons for ten minutes before we realized where he was, and ever since then my GUI key is disabled. I have verified that it is, evidently, the GU_OFF command that was run, as it is strictly the GUI key that is disabled and even when I swap GUI and ALT (Meta) it remains the GUI key (even after it changes position) that simply does nothing. I have never installed my own firmware and mostly have just utilized the Dvorak layer. I really need my GUI key back. I've verified that it is the keyboard and not the system by using the keyboard on another, my Windows gaming box, and still there is no GUI key (there used to be, as it brought up the Windows start menu, which I used sometimes).
Any idea what could have disabled my GUI (Windows, Super) key on my Planck, and how I can get it back short of flashing the keyboard (I can't get to Flashing, but that's another post)?

Today I learned about #gnuOctave, apparently as an OS alternative to #MatLab. Full disclosure: I've never actually used matlab. Does anyone have experience with Octave? Was it good?

My life is so much better after I removed #emacs #UndoTree. Things that I just wrote off as failing before, and as freezing my process, just WORK now. For example, it turns out that "elfeed update" causes big buffer changes and that undotree was freezing the thread trying to track those changes. Same story with Telega startup. I had really suspected that my HD was failing; it didn't occur to me that I was getting sabotaged by a global buffer-monitoring plugin.
-
#emacs I was experiencing freezes of sometimes up to 30 seconds about 3/4 of the the time when I used my muscle memory to hit "undo", which I do as part of my regular "kill-line undo" combo. Something must have changed recently because I started to have show-stopping freezes of my emacs thread when I tried a routine "undo." I finally managed to squeeze a `toggle-debug-on-quit` and, with a bit of patience, got a C-g in during the freeze. The culprit in the resulting stack trace was my global undo-tree mode, which in combination with my other settings must have started failing. I turned it off by removing the line in my init.el and also running `global-undo-tree-mode` to toggle the mode and… far, no more funny freezes on undo. There are occasions when the undo tree is great and useful, but not at the cost of sometimes completely being a show stopper.

I just love it when my browser WORKS. When the website doesn't break my "open in new tab" or my "back" or my "history." And I love when it's a surprize. When I click something that I was sure was going to break stuff, and it worked without breaking! No more stupid JS-only on-click handling with a useless link, etc. #webdev #htmlFirst

At some point (I missed the memo) #xtdb stopped espousing #datalog and invented #xtql. I'm guessing this was to step out of any annoying dependencies of datalog and dampen comparison with the other major datalog approaches in #Clojure.
https://docs.xtdb.com/intro/what-is-xtql.html I especially enjoy the side-by-side Clojure/JSON comparisons here
