The threat of extinction by AI is not what we have to worry about. Catastrophe is far more likely. And the fact that the current leaders of the AI race appear to be cut from the same cloth as the men who didn't put enough lifeboats on the Titanic is something that should concern us all.

I disagree with the level of doom certain AI researchers are screaming about right now. They're getting one thing right though: the people in charge are irresponsible.

When you have leaders who authentically believe that their technology has a roughly 10% chance of harming the human race and who are plowing ahead anyway, that is NOT a sign of healthy leadership. That is a sign of things that are far more dangerous to humanity than AI: human hubris and greed.

Think of some of the world's worst manmade catastrophes: oil spills, nuclear meltdowns, chemical-fueled fires. The new technologies being used aren't usually the ultimate source of the catastrophe. The disregard for safety in pursuit of money or glory is almost always the underlying threat.
