  1. I run huo-ju's excellent port of @photoprism on FreeBSD to manage my family's complete library of pictures (~25K):
    github.com/huo-ju/photoprism-f

But performance on some DB operations was lacking: simply adding photos to albums took ~5-10s to complete. So I decided to take a look at what I could do.

Turns out all I needed was to migrate the DB from SQLite to MariaDB.

And I documented my process on a blog post:

  2. Grabbed this one free from Epic (no longer there, sorry), but it was a fun little adventure typing game.

Yes, PC only, with a keyboard.

Cute visuals and interesting story telling.

  3. It seems that too many people didn't watch or understand The Karate Kid (1984).

I'm proudly on team Mr. Miyagi. Doing the work, practicing my chops, even when skipping it and going straight to the good parts might seem appealing, because I know it brings me satisfaction and makes me a better practitioner in the end.

This is a post about using genAI. In my case, for coding.

  4. Wow, unless this is absolutely required (I can't think of why it wold be), this is why people should avoid #GoDaddy at all costs.

Forcing people to expose their personal details to be able to transfer domains from GoDaddy to another registrar is disgusting.

  5. @maxleibman thanks to some of the devs of open source software I use daily:

    * @nikclayton for the very client I'm typing this from: #Pachli
    * @_jocmp for RSS reader with the quality and simplicity I love: #CapyReader
    * @CalcProgrammer1 for allowing me to tone down the RGB party that every PC hardware now embeds, without having to install a different malware per brand: #OpenRGB

And I'm sure I'd find many other contributors to software I use if I looked better, but thank you all!

  6. @_jocmp I did try #ReadYou when searching for my Android #RSS reader of choice.

While it got the job done, it was inexplicably slow at loading my feeds. And it felt a bit cluttered. So much so that I gave #CapyReader a try, and I'm very glad I did.

Capy works well, is very performant, and is clutter-free. I see its simplicity as a plus, really.

  7. It's going pretty well!

I use #TrueNASCore and its Cloud Sync feature, which is based on #Rclone. And I decided to setup the sync to Hetzner using SFTP.

My first upload attempt had many failed files, because I didn't RTFM and tried using 16 simultaneous connections when Hetzner says their limit is 10, and 8 is advised for SFTP:
    docs.hetzner.com/storage/stora

The second attempt successfully uploaded 342 GiB at ~7.25 MiB/s.

Then I tested downloading 17.624 GiB of that, at ~44.2 MiB/s.

  8. Woke up this morning to our #NestProtect going bonkers about low battery. Not the occasional "<beep> I'm low on juice", but going ballistic about it at 6 in the morning and preventing us from sleeping.

Took the #InternetOfShit device down and removed the batteries to stop it from beeping. Some batteries were warm. Very warm.

As it happens, it is a well known (and not fixed) problem:

  11. I like this idea, a lot!

And that's even with me being lucky enough not to be discriminated, harassed, or a victim of hate speech.

It is not enough to ask people to be civil. Those things need to be enforced!

  13. @CAD oh wow, I've been trying to use #Lemmy, but all clients I tried are still in early development stage/not working properly, even #Jerboa or the official web client.

#wefwef doesn't seem to be perfect, but IMO, is miles ahead. Thanks for the heads up.
