I have so many friends who are immigrants or refugees or close relatives of immigrants or refugees. My grandparents were both things.
I've tagged a few friends who have very long family history in the US, including a number of Indigenous people.
Whatever your historical relationship to the US might be, the need is pressing to protect people who are being targeted indiscriminately by the US govt. If you're a couple generations removed from the immigrant experience, imagine if your ancestor(s) had been rounded up, hauled off to detention centers, deported to third countries they had no connection to, shot, killed, allowed to die of medical complications because they were denied the care they needed to stay alive, separated from their minor children, been children themselves and torn from their families. This is what's going on now, and almost all of it is illegal. Even when technically legal, the mitigating factors that would normally have been taken into consideration are being ignored.
Even native born people are being harassed and unlawfully detained. Their first, fourth, fifth and fourteenth amendment rights are being trampled. This has happened even to the most deeply rooted of all: Indigenous people.
How can we all not have a stake in protecting vulnerable people? -
