@donkersgoed more we talk about integration latency more I think #aws should start to review how they work. #eventbrige is an example. They upgraded to KLC 2 and made a giant leap, but I think all the services should aim for a certain standard that should be a cross-team because sometimes there is so much difference.

@stephenbawks @donkersgoed about the performance gain with #eventbrige is around 65% just moving from KLC 1.x to 2.x

Dear AWS, please let me be a cloud engineer again – Luc van Donkersgoed's Notes
Link
📌Summary:
Luc van Donkersgoed, a principal engineer at an AWS-centric logistics company, expresses his concerns about AWS' focus on Generative AI (GenAI) and its potential negative impact on the core infrastructure and applications that make AWS popular among developers.
🎯Key Points:
1. Van Donkersgoed, an AWS Serverless Hero, has been using and benefiting from AWS products for a long time. However, he fears that AWS' focus on GenAI is pushing away the very elements that make it unique and successful.
2. The obsession with GenAI started with the release of ChatGPT by OpenAI on November 30, 2022, during AWS' yearly developer conference, Re:Invent. The following year, GenAI dominated Re:Invent 2023, with most talks and sessions focused on its infrastructure, integrations, data, and applications.
3. In 2024, AWS' focus on GenAI has taken on hysterical proportions, with the majority of talks and booths at AWS events focused solely on GenAI.
4. Van Donkersgoed argues that while GenAI can bring new opportunities, it cannot exist without an existing product to apply to, and businesses need to be well-established and functional before investing in GenAI.
5. Van Donkersgoed believes that AWS should not be a GenAI-only company and should focus on its core infrastructure, applications, and fundamentals, such as performance, reliability, cost efficiency, security, operational excellence, and sustainability.
6. He also believes that AWS should listen to its customers and help developers build better applications by addressing their pain points and educating them on infrastructure fundamentals.
7. Van Donkersgoed's main goal is to regain his position as a cloud engineer at AWS, as he values the company's tools and services that allow him to build and support businesses effectively.

Right Time, Right Mood
I have half a dozen books checked out from the library and I’m pretty sure I single-handedly inspired a reduction in hold limits, but that’s okay. “To be read” is not just an aspiration, it’s a way of life. And while I’m very much a library person, this quote speaks to me:
“Think not of the books you’ve bought as a ‘to be read’ pile. Instead, think of your bookcase as a wine cellar. You collect books to be read at the right time, the right place, and the right mood.” ― Luc van Donkersgoed

OpenSearch Serverless is finally truly Serverless, as opposed to its previous minimal commitment of $700/month! Very nice and long overdue improvement ❤️

Opus 4.8 has been released on AWS Bedrock, less than 6 weeks after the 4.7 release. Let’s hope this release is more willing to do work than the last one 😬

I will be hosting a PostNL-internal workshop "how to build your first AI agent" soon. The participants will learn about interacting with local data and external systems through tools and an agentic loop. To get them started quickly, I built a simple terminal interface and "external" display to interface with. I think it turned out quite nicely!

I really like this deep integration of OpenTelemetry in the AWS SDK for .NET 😍
OpenTelemetry is awesome, add it to all SDKs please! #awswishlist

I find it very frustrating that IPv4 on AWS costs big $$$ (NAT and IP addresses), but building an IPv6-only VPC is practically impossible.
Especially because it's AWS service endpoints that require IPv4.
#awswishlist: native IPv6 support for all AWS services - lead by example!

It's my birthday! I turned 39 today, and somehow the Lego set my family gave me is also 39 times as large as the ones I built as a kid. Can't wait to put this together 😊 #bigkid

whoa, Whoa, WHOA, what's this? #Amazon #EventBridge latency suddenly dropped by 67%! SIXTY-SEVEN PERCENT!
Until last night P50 latency was around 430ms. A few hours ago, this dropped to 140ms 🤯 Big shoutout to the EventBridge team - this is extremely welcome!

If you want to learn about the in-depth mechanics and origin story of the new EventBridge Pipes service, make sure you listen to this podcast with @nik, Brooke Jamieson and Dave Isbitski.
It has a ton of details you won't learn anywhere else!
