I have several app ideas where some sort of Mastodon integration sounds fun, like publishing a photo or seeing public posts using a certain hashtag. Instead of reimplementing the same, necessary but boring, steps of signing in a user and storing their secrets over and over, I decided that a small Android library might be sensible.
Perhaps this library is useful for other developers as well. You can check it out at https://codeberg.org/bocops/beringia

Altamira – delayed boosting
Last week, Seth Larson published some ideas about being smart when "boosting", which is Mastodon's term for reblogging content and thus making it visible to your own followers. The original article can be found here, but my key takeaways are the following: Considering a single account, it is preferable for boosts performed by this account to be spread out over time. If they aren't, they will only happen when the account owner is currently active, and thus likely won't reach other users in other timezones. The boosts will also be clustered in everyone's timeline - and no one wants to see a dozen boosts by the same person in a row. Considering a single piece of content that gets boosted, it is again preferable if not all of its boosts happen at the same time but over the course of a day or two, so that it might reach a bigger audience, and reactions such as replies get spread out a bit as well. Seth's suggestion is to implement functionality in Mastodon clients to boost eventually instead of immediately - and I couldn't help picking up that idea for the app I'm experimenting with. […] -

Altamira – a Mastodon companion app
Whenever I participated on social media platforms in the past, key functionality seemed to be unavailable. In some cases, functionality I consider to be important just might not be that useful for most other people - but in other cases, functionality that is useful would actually be detrimental to some bottom line the company considers more important than its users, and thus doesn't get implemented. As just one example, I consider it to be useful for the accounts I follow, as well as those that follow me, to be checked for their activity regularly, and unfollowed automatically if they are indeed inactive - because talking into a void just isn't fun. Follower counts are an important metric for influencer-type people and the platforms that want to attract and host them, which likely is why, as far as I am aware, none of the commercial platforms offer this functionality. Location hashtags
While people already tag their posts with hashtags derived from city or other location names (e.g. #Berlin, #CentralPark), these hashtags aren't always useful: if you want to see content from just your neighborhood in a large city, or content that is local to your current position in a rural area that does not have a single, useful location name, there might not be any agreed-upon hashtag that can be searched for. Even in cases where such a hashtag does exist, it might be hard to learn […] -

I seems @bocops and I have found a new name for the current #BigBone project: It's "yuki", that's it. It's Japanese and means "snow". I like the name because it is short, easy to remember. Furthermore, our library originates from the #mastodon4j project, whose author is also japanese.
So far I have not found any negative interpretation of this word.

Dear bot posing as "Emma Kate",
I've spent some time reading your mail and really liked how you sent it to the completely wrong guy, because the app you mention is not by me.
I would have liked to look at a few examples of animated explainer videos that resonate with someone, but you not only mixed up your recipients, but also forgot to link to your own page.
I still had a look at it, and found the combination of laggy animations and at least three different graphic styles lacking.

This is the best video I've ever seen about the 1066 Battle of Hastings! Granted, it's also the only video I've ever seen about the Battle of Hastings, but still... :)
Turns out, they also have more than 2.5 hours worth of Lord of the Rings lore in what seems to be the same presentation style, which I have to check out next.

"PUBLISHER or INTERMEDIARY or BOTH. If you own the app you're monetizing and/or you're paid directly by Google, then you're classified as PUBLISHER. If not, you're classified as INTERMEDIARY. If you belong in both categories, you're classified as BOTH."
The first part of that paragraph describes a binary choice, so how could BOTH ever be correct here? 🤡
