  1. I am slow and lazy. So my project on writing the textbook on computational systems biology is moving at a snail's pace.
The book chapters are here on git: github.com/biplabbose/Systems_

Please use the materials in your course and give me feedback for improvements.

  2. Touch-me-not blooming!

It is a creeper that stays close to the ground. But here in Assam, these plants often form dense high bushes with thick stems. The leaves that are away from the ground are not sensitive to touch.

Any clue or reference on this aspect?

  3. A newbie question on Julia:

Converted a large MC code set in Julia from C. It is a one-to-one mapping from my previous C code, except few vectorizations.

It uses only one library- Random, for rand().

The Julia code is terribly slower than the C code.

Can someone please throw some pointers on this problem?

  4. "Mathematics Is Biology's Next Microscope ... " -by Joel E. Cohen

This is an old paper, but it provides lots of food for thought.

For example, it boldly states, "In the coming century, biology will stimulate the creation of entirely new realms of mathematics."

It also lists a few of the mathematical developments arising out of biology.

What are your thoughts on the central idea - biology-inspired /driven mathematics?

  6. An interesting paper.

Earlier, numerical approach with random sampling from parameter space had been used to study all sorts of adaptive network motifs.

But this paper uses a different analytical approach.

  10. As lots of new language models crop up, social media is abuzz again with "AI and doomsday" discussions

Answers to questions on 'ethics,' 'values,' etc., are littered with circular logic and self-referential statements. Honestly, I am always confused while following these debates. It is often much easier to follow my own beliefs without argument.

  11. Here are a few jewels from this excellent article:

"At its core, statistics is about evaluating the uncertainty of estimates and how that uncertainty impacts inferences and decision making."

"Of course most of us receive some training in statistics, but it’s often so shallow it does more harm than good - a little knowledge can be dangerous if it obscures your own ignorance."

  12. There are efforts to connect gene expression to cell morphology. But can we consider the mapping from the molecular space (gene expression) to morphological feature space to be Bijective? Possibly not. It could be non-injective also. Any thoughts?

I need a few examples for a general talk to a broader audience of "experimental biologists."

  15. Now everyone has an opinion on Musk's escapade with Twitter. Here is a piece from Scientific American.

I prefer not to be a political punter and will wait to see how things unfold. Still, this article is interesting - beyond Twitter & Musk.

It nicely explains the differences between a Complicated System ( eg. Car, spacecraft) and Complex System ( eg Social behavior, living systems).

  16. The predominant approach in Biology is - "Let's see what is there in nature."

What if we ask the opposite - "Why don't we observe this particular property/phenomenon in the living system?"

This is something similar to what Bernard Shaw said - "You see things and you say 'Why?' But I dream things that never were and I say 'Why not?'"

Will this approach lead us to develop more 'Theory-driven' research in Biology?

Invitation to the memorial service on his birthday 🌹

On 14 March 2024, our beloved friend, brother and colleague, Biplab Basu, went on his last journey. Biplab stood by our side as a person, activist, counsellor, civil and human rights activist.

Biplab's life and his vision of social change were inextricably linked and were driven by love, compassion, ingenuity, resilience and humour. Biplab never called it a day. He could be found everywhere, in universities and editorial offices, at rallies and demonstrations, in protest camps and neighbourhoods of solidarity. This never stopped him from doing what he was passionate about: empowering people and giving them courage. His fight against racism and racist police violence has left its mark on us all. Biplab has inspired and touched so many people.
