NATO says it is ready for possible Russian escalation
NATO's top general, Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone, has stated that the alliance is ready to respond to possible Russian escalation on Europe's eastern flank.

Details: Dragone's statement came amid increasingly frequent warnings about a possible false-flag attack by Moscow.
"The alliance is ready, the structure is ready, the soldiers … the weapons are ready," he said, adding that NATO is continuing its work in "increasing" these forces "in number … and also in sophistication".
In recent weeks, Europe has encountered a growing number of airspace violations and attempted acts of sabotage, as tensions with Russia continue to rise over its full-scale war against Ukraine. In August, US intelligence reports warned that Moscow is planning a limited attack on a NATO country in the coming years.
Dragone, Chair of the NATO Military Committee, said the alliance's generals did not discuss the latest warnings on 19 September, but stressed that NATO has "4,000 pages" of military plans ready to defend its eastern flank, starting with scenarios involving a "minimal crisis or interference [on] our soil". In 2023, NATO allies agreed on three regional defence plans following Moscow's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
"[The allies are] ready in case of an escalation. In case of an attack, we know how to do it," Dragone said.
Quote: "Russia's reckless behaviour over the last weeks and months … continues to test allied resolve and aims to undermine trust and weaken our unity. I want to be clear – these attempts are not dividing us. They are sharpening our tools, making us much more united and determined."

Le Pen condemns Russia's hostile actions against France
Two leading figures of France's far-right National Rally party, Marine Le Pen and Jordan Bardella, have taken a firm position towards Moscow in a statement released on Saturday 19 September.

Details: Marine Le Pen and Jordan Bardella said Russia cannot "expect to dictate France's policy, directly or indirectly, through intimidation, threats, destabilisation or psychological pressure", condemning Moscow's hostile actions.
"No provocation, covert operation or destabilising action will be able to force France to facilitate Russia's pursuit of its military objectives in Ukraine," they added.
The statement came a day after a meeting at the Élysée Palace, attended by Jordan Bardella and intended to brief political forces on the geopolitical crises confronting France.
Le Pen, who leads the presidential race in opinion polls, regularly encounters criticism from her opponents over positions they regard as conciliatory towards Russian ruler Vladimir Putin.
The politicians said they strongly condemn Moscow's decision to take control of the assets of European companies that continue to operate in Russia, such as Nestlé and Auchan, calling it "a hostile act" that "directly undermines the interests and rights of our companies".
They also said they "support all measures necessary to strengthen the security of our strategic infrastructure", after French President Emmanuel Macron announced on 18 September that he had instructed the government to prepare a plan to protect critical infrastructure from Russian hybrid attacks.
Acknowledging the "deterioration in the security situation" reported to political forces, Marine Le Pen and Jordan Bardella said that "France cannot (...) leave unpunished any hostile actions carried out on its territory against its infrastructure, its strategic interests or its people".

США, Дания и Гренландия готовят соглашение об усилении безопасности в Арктике
Страны планируют подписать на следующей неделе на полях Генассамблеи ООН соглашение об укреплении безопасности в Арктике и Северной Атлантике. Документ вступит в силу после необходимых парламентских процедур.

US approves potential sale of more than US$2 billion in air defence equipment to Ukraine
The US Department of State has approved a possible US$2.68 billion sale of American air defence equipment to Ukraine.

Quote: "The US Department of State has made a determination approving a possible Foreign Military Sale to the Government of Ukraine for purchase of Air Defence Development Upgrades and related equipment and services. The estimated total cost is US$2.68 billion."
Details: If the deal is concluded, Ukraine will finance the purchase using European contributions and funds from the US Foreign Military Financing (FMF) programme allocated under the previous US administration.
The FMF funds will be counted as the US contribution to the US-Ukraine Reconstruction Investment Fund on a reimbursable 1:1 basis.
Ukraine requested the purchase of the following equipment, which is not classified as major defence equipment:
• S-300 Clone missiles
• GAM-67 missiles
• Range-Extended Air Defence Laser Guided Rocket missile systems
• Improvised Transporter Erector Launcher 1.5
• mobile launching system modification kits
• RPS 202 counter-Unmanned Aircraft System radars, among other equipment.

Trump: Russia has already attacked Ukrainian allies
US President Donald Trump has said that Russia has already attacked Ukraine's European allies and has been doing so for nearly five years.

Details: Trump was responding to a journalist's question about Polish leaders' concerns over a possible Russian attack on Ukraine's allies in Europe.

Trump signs Graham sanctions bill targeting Russia
US President Donald Trump has signed a bill on sanctions against Russia, co-authored by the late Senator Lindsey Graham.

Quote: "HH.R. 5334, the 'Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026,' which authorises and expands statutory sanctions, tariffs, and prohibitions on Russia and extends existing sanctions on Iran."
Details: Trump signed the bill on 18 September (in Kyiv time, on the night of 18-19 September).
The law has therefore now entered into force.
The legislation provides for sanctions against Russian officials, banks, oligarchs and the shadow fleet" and allows the US president to impose tariffs of up to 100% on countries that buy Russian oil and gas. Sanctions against Iran are extended for another five years.
Background:
• On 17 September, the US House of Representatives passed a bill on sanctions against Russia backed by the late Republican Senator Lindsey Graham.
• On 7 August, the US Senate voted 86 in favour of the Russia sanctions bill, co-authored by Graham and Blumenthal.
• Reports in the media later stated that the bill was facing growing opposition in the House of Representatives and could be blocked at least until the November congressional elections.
• Earlier, the Senate revealed details of an updated version of the bill.

Putin accuses Kyiv of refusing to negotiate: They are doing everything to prevent peace
Russian leader Vladimir Putin has claimed that, despite proposals to resume negotiations, Kyiv is unwilling to hold them and is doing everything to prevent peace.

Quote: "Representatives of the Kyiv regime, the leadership in Kyiv, talk about peace and propose to resume so-called negotiations, but they themselves commit such crimes and do everything to ensure that there is no peace and no negotiations."
Details: Putin also said that, since Russia could not be intimidated, Kyiv's actions could only be aimed at avoiding negotiations.
For reference: In recent years, Ukraine has repeatedly proposed holding a face-to-face meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Putin in a neutral country to negotiate an end to the war launched by Russia. However, Russia has repeatedly rejected this, insisting that any such meeting take place only in Moscow.
Background:
• On 12 September, Putin rejected Zelenskyy's proposal to hold talks on ending the war on the sidelines of the G20 summit in the US. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stressed that Putin was ready to meet Zelenskyy only in Moscow.
• Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov also called Zelenskyy's invitation to Moscow a "huge gesture of goodwill". He claimed that Russia remained open to negotiations with Ukraine but would not halt the war while the talks were taking place.
