  1. It’s not really Autumn until I have looked out the window on a dark October night and listened to this.

I doubt I'll ever get to play the video-game he created this for, but it's an extremely unsettling design. Bravo, sir!

  3. 1/ Today's news has a story about the real world suburban house which was used for exterior shots in the never good but somehow compulsive Nixon-era sitcom The Brady Bunch.

    theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2

The real Chez Brady was refurbished a few years ago as part of a Brady Bunch themed renovation reality series. But that venture is just one of a number of mutant offshoots the original show has spawned.

The original show ran from 69 to 74, but it didn't stay dead for long...

  4. 2/ Wildly experimental and showcasing some cutting edge technology, its use of very fast editing and synthesizer music must have made it seem positively otherworldly to all the squares and, most likely, a large chunk of the cool kids too.

It frequently feels more like Avant Garde sci-fi than TV comedy. The empty white studio set and in-show computer console have an unnerving THX 1138 quality to them.

    The second episode is here.

  5. 1/ Back in 1969 the producers of the hugely popular Laugh In tried to get a more daring and much odder skit-show on the air. The end result, Turn On, has the unusual distinction of effectively being cancelled midway through its inaugural episode, with multiple affiliates refusing to return to the show after the first ad-break.

Now, some kind soul has uploaded it to Youtube and it is quite something.

  6. 12/ The film's finale ups the transphobia by having Leatherface dress entirely in drag. Aesthetically the wig is certainly an improvement over that mullet, but the flowing black dress feels wildly impractical when it comes to stalking and slashing.

The original film does suggest that Leatherface is toying a little with gender, but this sequel goes full TERF. It's not his worst hour sartorially, but it's definitely problematic in terms of representation.

  7. 9/ Screenwriter David J Schow envisaged his version of the character as an angry teen, and this iteration certainly has the energy of an adolescent doing the bare minimum to adhere to a school dress code.

We should also note that Leatherface, never a model of dental excellence, has really let his choppers to heck. Yes, his new chrome-plated chainsaw sure is impressive, but maybe he'd be happier with a duller blade and a brighter smile.

  8. 8/ New Line Cinema's Leatherface: Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3 (1990) gives us a less dapper L-face.
No sharp suit. No cowboy boots. Instead, he's grungier, dressed in filthy brown slacks and matching shirt. He's still wearing a tie, but it's very loose.

In an acknowledgement of that leg injury he acquired in the first film, he now has a leg brace. If that injury is still causing him pain we can, perhaps, forgive him for prioritizing comfort over style.

  9. 1/ Okay, it's August 18th, making this the 50th Anniversary of the date the classic horror movie The Texas Chain Saw Massacre is set on.

So, to mark Chainsaw Day this year, I'll be spending the weekend exploring Leatherface from a hitherto ignored angle. Sure, we all know he's an effective killer, but does he also slay in a sartorial sense?

Yes, it's time to ponder Leatherface's many looks.

  10. Every time someone asks me what movie I think needs to be remade, I almost always suggest Albert Pyun's Radioactive Dreams (1985) - a sci-fi action comedy with a great premise, a splendid poster, and an execution which really doesn't do right by either.

The film is OOP on physical media and doesn't seem to be streaming anywhere. At least, not officially.

  11. Oh, so you liked The White Lotus but now lack a source of Hotel based narrative intrigue. Well, good news, the good folk at UK DVD label Network have, in what feels like a moment of delirium, released this monster of a box-set. 700 episodes of Crossroads, a notoriously ramshackle soap set in the English midland's premiere Motel. I am weirdly tempted to buy this.

  12. The recent death of prolific B-movie director Albert Pyun reminded me of the strangest thing in his filmography. Road to Hell (2013) is an unofficial sequel to Walter Hill's cult favourite Streets of Fire - with Michael Pare and Deborah Van Valkenburgh, reprising their roles.

Hill's film has gorgeous cinematography and incredible production design work. Pyun's does not have such things, relying on heavy use of green screens.
