South #Yorkshire is a year away from bringing #buses under public control as part of the South Yorkshire People’s Network. From September 2027, decisions on fares, routes and timetables will be made locally, with free bus #travel for under-18s also planned.
A new fleet of electric buses will begin arriving, while bus stops and shelters are set to be upgraded. The changes are intended to create a simpler, more affordable and reliable network.
The region’s wider transport plans are already under way. Supertram came under public control in 2024, with investment planned in tracks, stops and a new £90 million tram fleet. The Magna Tram Train station has improved links between Sheffield and Rotherham, while rail, cycling and walking projects are also progressing.
Bus depots are being upgraded and electrified ahead of franchising. Services will return to public control in Doncaster and most of Sheffield in September 2027, followed by Barnsley and Rotherham.
