  1. Still one of the greatest punk songs of all time, I only just now discovered there's a VIDEO for Dieter Meier's "Cry for Fame". The 1978 single sees the Swiss conceptual artist (and later frontman of the avant pop group Yello) maniacally shouting through a frenetic blitz of distorted guitars, anchored by a rhythm section that sounds like the bottom's already collapsed from underneath. Most folks first came to know this obscure song via the "Killed by Death" punk bootleg series in the 90s, but my old pal Martha (former DJ from WHRB, WPRB, and WFMU) was wise to it years earlier, and routinely sang its praises on the airwaves. I owe her a tremendous debt for dragging it across my radar.

The B-Side is also a scorcher. Why on Earth hasn't anyone re-issued this?

  14. I'm a big fan of songs that mention other bands, with "She's in Love with the Rolling Stones" by the Telefones being an easy fave. I just got a random jones to hear it and found this great live clip from some dingy Dallas club in '82. Mega bonus points for the crowd shots, featuring a bunch of pencil-mustached nerds with bowl cuts and Oxford shirts dancing maniacally as the band tears it up. Also, I never realized that was a trumpet -- the studio version had me thinking it was a sax. No wonder I got kicked out of marching band. youtu.be/MXKAOTENpKw?si=K_CB4z

  19. @feld i ended up as maintainer of #kbd in #nixos, because i was the last person who touched it. i don't even know what it does exactly. something related to keyboard layouts

for the update our bot (r-ryantm) created a pull request

    github.com/NixOS/nixpkgs/pull/

someone let the integration tests run by another bot (ofborg)

and since they passed, merged the pr (into staging, because the change rebuild many packages)

i was not needed, which is good because i already have burnout

    so efficient is nix!

  24. I saw this #kbd layout on Kono Store ... which was quite cool, but then I had another idea ...

What if we had a full calculator pad on a kbd, complete with a dedicated screen, so we can talk to a decent calculator app directly. Then when we can use a copy/paste key to copy the answer from the calculator back up to the computer ...

  29. Some disturbing revelation I had recently is that #kbd project - kbd-project.org/ - that is part of #Linux repo and is the foundation of the console/keymaps subsystem setup, is maintained by russians, more precisely by the group behind #ALTLinux project, with team members like Michael Shigorin fully supporting #russian #invasion and threatening me over email for my petitioning of #Github to restrict access for russia. Awesome indeed.
