  1. I think what hurts the #QR payment method branding the most is how even when it's advertised as it just works, even across countries, it's not that uncommon for there to be some weird gotchas.

For example, even within Malaysia itself, dumbasses like
#TouchNGo loves 'gatekeeping' some QR payment options to only work with their e-Wallet and not the national standard, #DuitNow. In other cases, there might be instances where you'd think paying to this QR would work when that QR works and they all look the same - turns out that's not the case cos one's a merchant QR and the other's a personal QR. Pretty fucking dumb and unnecessary distinction/incompatibility (imo).

Same experience when going abroad e.g. Thailand. Some QRs, you could make payments to it. Other QRs, even when they're branding the same 'logo' e.g.
#ThaiQR, it ends up not working cos of some arbitrary distinction. They really gotta fix this. Now, I'm wondering if it's the same experience for travellers coming to Indonesia.. I gotta find a 'merchant' QR and a 'personal' QR to see if I could scan and make payments to them.

  2. I know no one uses #Lazada anymore lol but pretty cool to see that while they're.. weirdly left behind in terms of payment methods and does not support #ApplePay (perhaps also #Google 's), it's pretty cool to see that they support #DuitNow QR.

  7. Also, in regards to cross-border payments via QR like #DuitNow and #PromptPay ; I know scanning their (merchant) QR for payments work - as mentioned, I’ve only been using #TnG eWallet for this bcos as far as I’m aware, their rates are more competitive than my bank’s (#Maybank). #ShopeePay ‘s doesn’t seem to work, as far as I can tell.

However these have only worked in instances where I’m the one scanning their QR - in one of the (7E) vending machines I’ve seen in
#Thailand that supports PromptPay, whereby they scan your QR (instead of the other way around), it’s not worked with my TnG eWallet QR - tho I reckon it’s bcos only the scanning part of TnG is DuitNow-compatible, while the QR it provides ‘to be scanned’, is not.

Quite a headache lol - I imagine it might work if I use my Maybank QR code instead? tho I’ve not tried. Maybank’s conversion rate is pretty shit tho. Prior to my travel, I’ve found and ranked the best currency conversion rate (for THB) is, from best to worst: My local money changer (bizarre, right?) > Wise > TnG eWallet > Maybank.

I might test/investigate this further, later. If the ‘being scanned’ part of the cross-border QR payment method works with my bank’s QR - cool. If that too does not work, then this cross-border QR payment thing’s insufficient (i.e. if it only works when we’re the one scanning the merchant’s QR).

  12. After considering both Indonesia and #Thailand for our upcoming trip in Sept, my wife and I have chosen #Phuket. We're prolly gonna do the same thing we did with our last trip to Osaka and not get cash, only adding our money to #Wise and using #ApplePay with it when possible, and cash withdrawn from our Wise card at an ATM in cash-only stores, but god it's such a shame that Wise does not support #DuitNow QR payments. They really should though >:(

That being said, Wise (at least somewhat) supports QR payments to Singapore's
#PayNow - and PayNow is compatible with DuitNow and some of the other participating QR payment systems including Thai's #PromptPay. I wonder if that means you could make QR payments from Wise to PromptPay QR codes... I doubt it lmao.

  22. Read yesterday that Malaysia's the leading country globally in terms of e-wallet/cashless transaction adoption with over 63% of Malaysians using them over cash. This does not surprise me honestly since I myself have not used cash (in Malaysia) 99% of the time for years now, and have not used any of my cards (physically) 90% of the time since 2 years ago when #ApplePay was made available here.

Almost everyone around me too are the same, preferring any of the available
#NFC payment methods like #GooglePay and #SamsungPay (which have been around for many years longer here than Apple Pay) when available, or fallback to #DuitNow (QR Pay) through any of the available #eWallet apps like #TNGeWallet or just about any of the first-party #bank apps like #MAE for #Maybank users or #CIMBClicks for #CIMB users.

Almost all shops from your local market and roadside stalls to restaurants or any stores in a shopping mall would at least support QR Pay should they not also have a bank card terminal (for NFC payments). Even my local laundromat and roadside car wash place accept QR Pay for a long while now, instead of how it was in the past constantly having to find change or stock some cash up in your wallet. This was my experience not just in KL/Klang Valley (the city), but also in other rural places throughout the peninsular.

Heck, should you need to, you don't even need your bank card to take out money from an ATM - you only need your phone to do that. My wallet's only filled with foreign money, otherwise I'd only have cash in my possession once~twice a year to give
Angpow or Duit Raya. Some government/public facilities I've been to don't even accept cash anymore. I think people just hate having to withdraw cash so often or have change lying around. I suspect this thing is no different in most other #SEA countries, seeing the growing number of countries where Malaysia's DuitNow QR Pay is compatible with - its counterparts.
