TSB brand to disappear from south-west Wales high streets after Santander completes £2.9bn takeover
The TSB name is set to vanish from south-west Wales high streets after Spanish banking giant Santander completed its near-£3 billion takeover of the bank.
Santander UK is reportedly planning to phase out the TSB brand and run the combined business as Santander UK – bringing to an end a name that has been a feature of British banking for more than two centuries.
Reports suggest the TSB brand, accounts and products will remain unchanged for at least 12 months while the two banks are integrated.
But after that, the historic name will disappear from high streets across the UK – including from south-west Wales, where TSB still operates branches in Llanelli and Swansea.
The £2.9 billion deal – completed at the end of April – is the single largest investment in the UK banking sector for more than 15 years.
Santander agreed a £2.65 billion buyout of TSB from Spanish banking group Sabadell last year, with the final price rising to £2.9 billion on completion.
TSB has its origins in 1810, when the Trustee Savings Bank movement was founded in Scotland.
The TSB brand emerged in the 1960s, before the various trustee banks amalgamated in the 1970s and the brand was listed on the stock market in 1986.
It merged with Lloyds Bank in 1995 to form Lloyds TSB in 1999, before being demerged again and bought by Sabadell in 2015 for £1.7 billion.
The bank currently operates around 175 sites across the UK.
A spokesperson for Santander said the takeover would create a stronger and more competitive bank.
“The acquisition of TSB is about creating a stronger, more competitive bank in the UK, with the scale to invest significantly more in customer service, technology and products,” they said.
The spokesperson acknowledged the value of the TSB brand. “TSB is a strong consumer banking brand and we recognise the value it has built with customers and within the UK market over a long time,” they said.
But they also signalled that the TSB name’s days appear to be numbered. “We will consider carefully how to make the most of the brand value in our model long term and expect no immediate changes,” the spokesperson said.
The combined Santander-TSB group will become the UK’s third biggest bank for current accounts and the fourth biggest for mortgages – serving nearly 28 million customers nationally.
Santander said there would be no immediate change for either Santander or TSB customers, who can continue using their accounts and cards as normal.
Nicola Bannister, who became chief executive of TSB on 1 May, said the takeover marked a significant new chapter for the bank.
“I look forward to leading TSB as we combine the very best of these two great businesses,” she said.
Mahesh Aditya, Santander UK’s new chief executive, described the deal as excellent news for UK banking.
“This is excellent news for UK banking, with the acquisition representing the single largest investment in the sector for over 15 years,” he said.
“Bringing TSB into the Santander group strengthens competitiveness in the market and is an important step in creating the best bank for customers.”
For south-west Wales communities, the news comes against a backdrop of accelerating high street change.
Lloyds Bank confirmed earlier this year that its Ammanford and Gorseinon branches would close in 2026 – adding to a long list of bank branch closures across the region.
A banking hub was confirmed for Gorseinon following those closure announcements, while a new OneBanx cash kiosk opened in Maesteg – both designed to fill the gaps left by traditional bank branches disappearing from local communities.
TSB itself has previously closed branches across the area, with the Carmarthen branch closing in recent years.
The latest news adds further uncertainty for customers – and follows a wider pattern of household-name retailers disappearing from south-west Wales high streets.
Up to 150 TGJones stores – formerly WHSmith – are facing closure, with seven stores across south-west Wales potentially affected.
Other UK brands have already disappeared from the high street in 2026, including LK Bennett, Claire’s and The Original Factory Shop – all of which closed all their stores in April after entering administration.
Modella Capital, the private equity firm now restructuring TGJones, was also the previous owner of Claire’s.
For TSB customers in south-west Wales, the message from Santander is clear: nothing will change immediately – but in the longer term, the high street they bank with is going to look different.

MUMBLES: Banking Hub opens today — and Pembroke Dock confirmed for June
Banking services are returning to two more communities across south and west Wales – with Mumbles opening its new banking hub this morning and Pembroke Dock confirming its hub will open in early June.
The Mumbles Banking Hub opened its doors for the first time today at Unit 6, Castleton Walk Arcade, Newton Road, Mumbles, SA3 4AX.
The hub will be open Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm – with community bankers from Barclays attending on Wednesdays, Lloyds Banking Group on Thursdays and NatWest on Fridays. Monday and Tuesday schedules are still to be confirmed.
Mumbles County Councillor Will Thomas, who confirmed the opening, said it was great news for the community and described it as returning banking services to the village.
The Mumbles hub was first recommended last year after high street banking services continued to disappear from the area, leaving residents and businesses without face-to-face banking locally.
Meanwhile in Pembrokeshire, Pembroke Dock Town Council has confirmed that its new banking hub will be sited in Pembroke Dock library, with an opening date expected in early June.
The council said the exact opening date would be shared in due course and urged residents from across the county to make use of the service.
Banking hubs are a national initiative designed to replace lost high street bank branches with a shared facility, where customers of multiple banks can carry out everyday transactions and speak to their own bank’s community banker on a rotating schedule.
The model has been rolled out across south-west Wales in recent months – with Morriston, Gorseinon, Porthcawl and Ystradgynlais all receiving hubs following community campaigns.
Not every community that has applied for a hub has been successful. Plaid MS Sioned Williams challenged cash access company Link over Pontardawe’s exclusion from the programme – a decision that angered local campaigners.
Banking hubs are operated by Cash Access UK and are recommended by Link, the cash access network, following an assessment of local need.
The assessment takes into account the number of bank branch closures in an area, the availability of alternative cash access points, and the demographics of the local population.
Mumbles and Pembroke Dock both qualify on the grounds of multiple branch closures in recent years, leaving communities without convenient access to in-person banking services.
For Mumbles residents, the hub on Newton Road is open from today. No appointment is needed for general counter services.
For Pembroke Dock residents, further details on the opening date and schedule will be published by the town council in the coming weeks.

Banking hub recommended for Mumbles as high street services continue to disappear
Mumbles has become the latest community in Swansea to be recommended a banking hub, after LINK — the UK’s cash access network — said the village qualifies for a dedicated shared branch. It follows an application from local councillor Will Thomas, who warned that years of bank closures have left residents struggling to access basic services.
If delivered, the hub would be the third in Swansea, joining Morriston’s already‑open site and Gorseinon’s hub, which is due to open later this year.
What the hub will offer
Banking hubs operate like a traditional branch but are shared by all major banks. Customers can withdraw and deposit cash, pay bills and speak to staff from their own bank on rotating days.
The project will now be taken forward by Cash Access UK, which will begin speaking to local businesses and searching for a suitable site in the coming weeks. There are currently 214 hubs open across the UK, including 12 in Wales.
Dr Chris Ashton, Chief Commercial Officer at LINK, said the decision followed evidence of strong local need.
“We’re delighted to recommend a new banking hub in Mumbles. Special thanks go to Councillor Thomas for helping to ensure we had a full picture of the town’s cash access needs.”
“Part of the fabric of a thriving high street”
Cllr Will Thomas, said the hub would restore a vital service that many residents still rely on.
“I’m absolutely delighted my application was successful, so Mumbles will once again have a dedicated community banking facility. Many residents still rely on face‑to‑face services, whether that’s for depositing cash, managing accounts, or simply having the reassurance of speaking to someone in person.”
He said the loss of high street banks had hit the village hard.
“Banking isn’t just about transactions. It’s part of the fabric of a thriving high street. When people come into the village to use banking services, they visit our cafés, shops and local businesses. It supports footfall, strengthens our local economy, and helps keep Mumbles vibrant.”
“A real difference for residents and small businesses”
Tonia Antoniazzi, MP for Gower, also welcomed the recommendation.
“This will make a real difference for residents — particularly those who need extra support when banking — as well as the many small businesses central to the area that rely on cash for their day‑to‑day operations. It’s an important step in keeping our community connected and thriving.”
LINK says anyone can check their nearest free cash access point using its online Cash Locator tool.

Banking lifeline finally opens in Ystradgynlais after three‑year fight
After years without a single bank on the high street, Ystradgynlais residents can at last walk through the doors of a permanent banking hub. The new facility on Commercial Street is the result of a dogged three‑year campaign that saw locals, businesses and community leaders refuse to take “no” for an answer.
The town was left high and dry in 2023 when Lloyds shut its branch despite posting record profits. Public meetings followed, petitions were signed, and applications were lodged with LINK — the body that decides where hubs go. The first bid was rejected, but campaigners pushed back, challenging the data and dragging regulators to Ystradgynlais to see the need for themselves.
That persistence paid off. A temporary hub opened in May, and now a permanent site has been unveiled at 14 Commercial Street, SA9 1HD.
How the hub will serve the town
After years of being left without a single counter service, locals can now walk into the new Commercial Street hub and deal with real people again. Doors are open Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, with different banks taking turns to staff the desks.
- Mondays bring Barclays back to town, giving customers face‑to‑face access that vanished when branches closed.
- Tuesdays are still waiting for a banker to be confirmed, but campaigners say it’s only a matter of time before another name is added.
- Midweek sees Lloyds return on Wednesdays, a striking turnaround after the bank pulled out of Ystradgynlais in 2023.
- HSBC takes the Thursday slot, offering services to residents who once had to travel miles for help.
- Fridays finish with Halifax on hand, rounding off the week with another big name back on the high street.
Victory after years of pressure
The fight to bring banking back to Ystradgynlais wasn’t easy. Applications were rejected, data was disputed, and regulators had to be shown around the town to see the need first‑hand.
At the opening, local MP David Chadwick called it “fantastic news for Ystradgynlais” and reflected on the long road to success:
“After months of pressure, rejected applications and persistent campaigning, including personally showing the Banking Hub regulator around our vibrant town, I’m delighted we’ve secured a permanent, long‑term hub on Commercial Street.
“I launched this campaign to make sure communities like Ystradgynlais and the surrounding area aren’t cut off from essential services.
“Securing a permanent Banking Hub is a major step in ensuring our towns remain supported, connected and able to thrive.
“I will continue pushing to ensure that facilities like this remain protected and that no community in our area is left behind.”
Senedd Member Jane Dodds also welcomed the news, adding:
“Access to banking is not a luxury; it is a necessity, particularly for older residents, small businesses, and those who rely on cash. This hub will make a real and lasting difference.”
