  1. @talexb Oh, regex performance is very rarely an issue at play in most apps (except when you get the backtracking wrong...) but that doesn't mean it shouldn't be regularly re-examined and re-optimized as new techniques are worked out and old systems can be ignored and hacks compensating for them dropped. (I assume the #ifdef eunice entries are gone. I hope)

The regex engine is very self-contained, though, so you can go at it without disrupting the rest of the language, which is nice.

  2. @Perl Check out @talexb’s announcement of this year’s North American #Perl and #RakuLang #Conference coming up this summer! #Toronto sounds lovely!

  9. @evan Well, obviously I missed my 3:14pm target, but the dessert was Apple Crumble Pie, served with Tahitian Vanilla Ice Cream. There was once piece left over, which I claimed for breakfast today. There was leftover pizza for lunch, so my last three meals have been pie and pie, pie, and pie.

  10. @ovid Ah .. this resonates with me, as I've been someone who was let go, not because there may have been issues with my performance, but because the process was broken.

It was a convenient termination for management and for the organization. Not so convenient for me, but I managed.

  11. My Internet is out. :/

Anyone else in experiencing the same problem with ?

  12. Pondering the latest mailing from LinkedIn. They seem a little .. desperate to drive engagement.

  13. And .. the power's out in East York. :/ Thank goodness for my trusty UPS.

  14. Huh. Apparently there's a water main break in East York, and 311 is telling me it might not be fixed until 6pm. That's a drag.

  15. This is cool -- metrolinx.com/en/projects-and- is the Ontario Line Truck Route Safety Plan, complete with lots of detailed maps of all of the truck routes for all of the various projects around the Ontario Line.

I'm guessing -- three years of construction, and then another three years of Why Isn't It Open Yet, Metrolinx?

  16. This is why I studiously avoid any product that asks to be connected to the Internet. Eventually, some nerd in Nebraska presses a button, and the device stops working, for some special lucky magic reason.

  18. @emptywheel.bsky.social Ooooh. I'd love to see #5, but I think #2 is the likely winner.

  19. @genehack I bought a a few years back to replace my aging 1994 fridge. Sweet double doors!

Now there's a doo-dad in the RH door hinge that's stopping the door from closing if I open it more than 90 degrees. I have to lift the damned thing to get I'm getting an urge to break it by forcing it. Or maybe trying to find a replacement door.

I can't imagine the comedy I'd get from a refrigerator repairman when I call to ask him to repair the door. :/

  20. I'm having an early breakfast in the Springhill Tim Horton's, and there's a local here who has been holding forth for the hour that I've been here. He's got a voice that carries.

I'm going to find somewhere quieter, like a nearby airport runway, or a busy highway.

  21. Cool -- SlashDot reports on what made British roads safer, and one of those points is roundabouts. Sure wish we had more of those here in Ontario.

Speaking of which, here's a radical idea: instead of treating a signaled intersection as a four way stop when the lights fail, how about turning it into a roundabout?
    :)

  23. When you happen to check LinkedIn, even though you were retired from your last job, and you see a position advertised by someone in your network. The position appears to be your last job, now paying 10-20% more than when you were discontinued.

Either the job's been open for two years, or someone else left the team.
