Fun fact: Fusion energy is exotic and new (on Earth, anyway) but from a grid operator's perspective, fusion energy power plants will look a lot like today's existing power plants.
When I first heard about this application, I thought, "OK, we're filling out some paperwork." It's a *lot* more than than. Engineering, planning, simulation work, etc.

Whale watching in Monterey Bay last weekend. Three moms and their calves form pod CA51, plus Jimmy from CA50 hanging around, showing off a huge dorsal fin. The moms would surface and then the calves would surface right next to them. I found the calves chubby and cute (caveat: I'm not a sea lion).

Illuminating fusion power plant configurator from Sam Wurzel at his Fusion Energy Base site so you can noodle around with various values for Q_sci, electricity conversion efficiency, fusion pulse rep rate, etc.: https://www.fusionenergybase.com/articles/fusion-physics-part-1-scientific-gain-and-fusion-power-plants

A quintet of California quail dropped by the house over the weekend — a first, though I've seen them in the neighborhood before. They're very round! And usually pretty hard to see lurking in the underbrush. But for about 5 minutes some of them perched in a nearby oak at a spot where I could point my lens through the foliage.

As long as we're talking about em dashes and AI — can the Google Gemini team please put spaces on either side of them? I know it's a styling choice, but I find it visually easier to parse with the spaces.

Another one of the Adobe AI-generated parachuting elephants. I kind of like this one in watercolor style, but its posture makes it look like it's on the ground, just with the ground missing.

For that niche of people (like me) who have mirrorless/DSLR cameras, GoPros, or drones, Samsung has some new pro-branded SD and MicroSD cards. 130MBps write speed, good for 4K video. 200MBps read speed should be helpful for video transfer. $73 for 512GB MicroSD, $93 for 512GB SD. Curious: Samsung touts their lower power usage.

Three #TsunamiWarning updates.
1. I got the web alert ~10 times in Firefox, Chrome, and Safari using various Google properties — Google Docs, Gmail, Google Messages, Google Maps.
2. Later web alerts added a "more info" button but I didn't see where it pointed.
3. My kid said a bunch of students' Apple Watches alerted at school. (They're generally of pre-smartphone age.) -
I hadn't heard of integrated computational materials engineering (ICME) until this ARPA-E award to CFS. $2.5M to use multiple computer models across different length scales to design 2 joined materials for our ARC power plant. Specifically the vacuum vessel . https://cfs.energy/news-and-media/arpa-e-award-boosts-cfs-quest-for-the-best-fusion-power-plant-materials #FusionEnergy #Plasma #DOE #Fusion #physics #engineering #ICME

If only there were some technology that would mean the Texas power grid isn't so isolated, able to send power out of the state when production is high and able to draw on sources out of state when demand is high... Something like a more interconnected power grid...

Wow, not only did American Airlines wipe out my miles after 2 years of not flying with them, they wiped out my entire account! Frequent flyer programs are supposed to encourage loyalty, but they often have the opposite effect for me.

We've now detailed the second core superconducting technology we developed at CFS for our fusion machines: PIT VIPER cables. Four years from idea to manufacturing, which is a breakneck pace for new magnet tech. Peer reviewed paper so people don't just have to take our word for it. Another quantum computer is here — Fujitsu and RIKEN in Japan. They went with superconducting qubits, like IBM, Google, and various others (but not all). 64 qubits so far. https://www.fujitsu.com/global/about/resources/news/press-releases/2023/1005-01.html

Is this 1. 3D model of a protein or 2. twisty magnets in a stellarator?
Answer: It's the Type One Energy magnets shown in their physics basis papers published today on the Infinity Two power plant: https://www.cambridge.org/core/journals/journal-of-plasma-physics/collections/physics-basis-of-the-infinity-two-fusion-power-plant

China has a new cable-laying ship almost as big as an aircraft carrier for networking, offshore wind turbines, etc. 10,000-ton payload, good for 75km of AC power line, 150km of DC power line, or 2000km of fiber-optic cable. It can install cables 4.5m deep under the seafloor.

New PPPL paper uses higher fidelity computer simulation (at NERSC) to evaluate our plan to handle plasma disruption problems in SPARC. TL;dr: the new simulation validates our approach, six injectors that squirt in gas to rapidly cool the plasma.

80 years ago today, the US dropped Fat Man, the plutonium-powered implosion bomb, on Nagasaki, Japan. I'm visiting Los Alamos, where the bomb was built, and today saw this replica at the lab's Bradbury Science Museum. LANL is now building replacement plutonium pits at TA-55. Heavy thoughts.
