@mem_somerville @stevegis_ssg
historically, after Big Storms, power restoration crews would flock to the places worst hit, sometimes traveling hundreds of miles.I wonder if there's a story to be told of whether Canadian crews have been/will be requested for this blizzard, and if they were willing to come, given the current us administration's ongoing and egregious disrespect toward our northern neighbors. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pUPK-HeIdhg #AtlanticCanada #blizzard

OMG I never saw the #FuckYeahCake hashtag before and I'm totally using that from now on. -
@stevegis_ssg Thanks for running the numbers! Perhaps I will add an example to the #pspp distribution.

You know how sometimes you love a band so much that you build it up in your head when you're gonna get to see them until they couldn't possibly live up to your expectations and then they do? And it's more than you hoped for and you're blissed out and just feel blessed to exist in this world where that can happen?
I fucking love #ThrowingMuses

For all that I HAVE DONE NOTHING BUT COMPLAIN THIS WEEK (and you're all very patient with me and kind to me and I thank you), I have just remembered that I'm seeing my legit favorite band ever in Rhode Island on Friday and then in my very own neighborhood on Saturday, and that helps a lot. #ThrowingMuses

#ThrowingMuses never got, like, Grandma's-heard-of-them famous, but definitely tour-the-world famous. Your indie rock friend has definitely heard of them.
(The other two favorites are DEFINITELY obscure hidden gems and people generally have not heard of them.)

A friend from the #ThrowingMuses online fan community came and stayed with us when he came to the US to see them!
Not only did he not steal my kidneys, but I came home that day complaining about a class I was taking for work, and confusing nonsense about "the second eigenvalue of the inverse covariance matrix," and it turns out Alistair's day job was a statistician in a university geography dept and he explained it for me!

Here's a song.
It's not current. It's not really relevant to anything today. It's not part of the Tuesday songs theme or anything. It just fucking rules.

The Draft now has a sign on the door saying "Closed for maintenance until Friday," and "maintenance" is an odd way of saying "because we got caught serving underage people AGAIN and repeatedly lying to the licensing board about it" but I guess they're maintaining SOMETHING, and also their liquor license is now suspended indefinitely but I suppose they didn't specify WHICH Friday.

Anyone in central #nj have a good source of farm fresh eggs? Looking for something in the New Brunswick/Piscataway area. I’m going to hit up the local farmers market this weekend. I’ve had it with eggs from the supermarket. Eggs are so much better in other countries. They look and taste like nothing we have here in the US. I have to imagine industrial egg farming is horribly unnatural.

Exactly. In the same way the #Constitution is not a #technicality.

@stevegis_ssg yep! I have seen both! The details and the symbols are different. Of course the one across Building 7 is full of scientific symbols!

For #Thighsday I do not do thirst traps myself but I will share with you the tip to check out Sebastian Baez, who is playing in the French Open right now and whose tree-trunk thighs his shorts strain to contain. Here's his insta:

Do you have a song that makes you cry? Today @neurothing would like your #Tearjerker songs for #TuneTuesday
There are a bunch, actually. The first one I thought of is Concrete Blonde's "Tomorrow Wendy."

in this podcast, Dr. Ali Nabavizadeh gives a great explanation of the differences between reptile lips, which don't have muscles, and mammmal lips, which do:
https://terriblelizards.libsyn.com/tls08e07-chewing-triceratops-with-ali-nabavizadehOf course it's inside a discussion on whether or not dinosaurs had lips. : ) It's about 30 minutes in.

Our Division is losing space so our lab is "condensing" and trying to coordinate with other labs moving in and one concern they raised is the liquid nitrogen freezer.
A liquid nitrogen freezer is provided from a big honkin' tank of liquid nitrogen plus a backup tank for when that one runs dry while we wait for a replacement. And because heat leaks into it and a giant heavy welded steel tank can only be so strong, these tanks occasionally have to vent pressure so they don't explode. (…)
-
And yes, absolutely, the venting events are sudden and VERY loud and it's a thick, crunchy kinda gushing sound, like white noise but dirty (off-white noise?), and did I mention loud? Like really loud?
Yes. Okay. Yes.
But, what I was trying to convey to them is, you get used to it. I think of it as the sound of that tank not exploding and maiming me, and that helps. If I'm being completely honest, I thought they were kinda being delicate flowers about it, a little. (…)
-
But then it also occurred to me that if you never go to harsh noise shows, that sound is probably more disturbing. I have absolutely paid to see artists play sets that sound like that. So I guess I need to accept that, okay, maybe I'm not the best judge of this.

It is, I am told, #LGBTQSTEMDay and here I go to make some figure panels for a manuscript resubmission.

It's #TuneTuesday by @Kitty with the theme by @TG_Esq #AllAboutTheBass
You know, bass is not the instrument my attention usually gravitates toward. A bassist has to be either really bad or really good (or, um, really hot) for me to notice. This is a song where I COULD NOT BELIEVE what the bassist was doing.

@stevegis_ssg I only learned that this was a thing when I started working with the #Tunica language and had to figure out what the dictionary entry marked "fanner for corn" referred to. It's woven like a basket and has its own word, which seems to be completely different from the general word for a fan. #MoreThanYouWantedToKnow

@stevegis_ssg @futurebird Nice. Was this part of the inspiration?
