  1. 🌍 EM-DAT, the world's most trusted global disaster database, maintained by UCLouvain's CRED, is at risk of shutting down after losing USAID funding.
In an era of intensifying climate extremes, reliable data are not a luxury. They are the infrastructure for informed decision-making.
I wrote a short post explaining why EM-DAT matters and how you can help by signing the open letter 👇

  2. New post with @joshuamarie: Bayesian Neural Networks in {tidymodels} with {kindling} 🔥

BNNs learn weight distributions instead of fixed values — giving uncertainty estimates alongside predictions, all within a standard {tidymodels} workflow.

  3. 🚀 New blog post live!

Together with @joshuamarie, we explore how to do more with neural networks in R using {kindling}, a higher-level interface to {torch} that makes building, training & tuning deep learning models smoother (and tidymodels-friendly)

  4. 📢 Excited to share that our paper “Semi-Markov modeling for disease incidence risk and duration” has been accepted for publication in Biostatistics & Epidemiology!

It explores cancer incidence risk and years of life lost due to cancer using a Semi-Markov illness-death model applied to Belgian Cancer Registry data, with implications for the right to be forgotten in insurance.

  8. I had a simple dream: put two giant telescopes on one mount and become a god-tier astrophotographer.

What actually happened: I may have created a gravitational threat to local infrastructure and possibly broke a guide camera I dropped before even powering anything on.

This video has it all — reckless optimism, questionable engineering, emotional damage, and way too many bolts.

Enjoy this tale of ambition, imbalance, and the moment my mount silently begged for mercy. 🔭🧠💥

  9. "Marx grasped this *essence* of capitalist democracy splendidly, when, in analyzing the experience of the Commune, he said that the oppressed were allowed, once every few years, to decide which particular representatives of the oppressing class should misrepresent them in parliament" #stateandrevolution
  10. #stateandrevolution

I definitely like the idea of #smashCSEC / #smashCSIS, and the idea of an international movement to do it (ie keep russia/chinese states out of it unless they are helping)...but how to organize this, without widespread use of #cwtch? And how to get enough people to use #cwtch to arrange for this?
  11. #stateandrevolution

    4) I get that there's basically no point to the bickering in parliament when no one *actually* listens to eachother, what matters is actions and votes. But that part is public, and we can all see how votes were cast

Suppose we replaced parliament with some kind of party identity approved, context-rich board group chat thing that allowed us** to efficiently coordinate and communicate...and opaquely to the outside world had our vanguard of whosits and whatdoyoucallems coordinate within it.

Surely there's some value in the outside knowing who to hold accountable for dumb /against the interests of the people votes. In parliamentary democracy, the people do that the next time they vote, at least in theory. But if we coordinate and resolve our inter-party conflict on a private back room chat there is no feedback there. This feels like a loss. Is it?

    3) the second of marx's #forgottenwords was that the state should be not just smashed ( :thumbsupkonata: ) but that the replacement "state" should be at working-men's wages

left somewhat undefined but that's something along the lines of 'MLA's should operate at minimum/mean wage*'

*or for shits and giggles a modified #geothmeticmeandian https://xkcd.com/2435/ which also includes 'minimum wage' each time

    2) Marx's #forgottenwords

"The *first* decree of the Commune...was the suppression of the standing army, and the substitution for it of the armed people"

This sounds like a great idea, and I have a long history of supporting it ( see for example, https://defdist.org )

but a couple of subthoughts are knawing at me

    i) #betterangelsofournature the long arc of history seems to be against empowering individuals to be more violent. It's of course pro-leviathan and the whole point here seems to be to do away with the monopoly of violence generally. But I do think there's some handwaving about the tendencies for internecine tit-for-tat to get out of control if everyone's armed. Maybe there's no general solution here and it's a community-by-community thing?

ii) How *do* you arm a people against firebombing? Is this one of those "we'll solve that problem once we start getting closer to being firebombed?" There seems to be not only a guns vs butter problem here but also one of too much generality of 'what are you arming them against'? Granted 'armed' is a pretty general purpose concept...

  14. a couple of thoughts on #stateandrevolution
    1) While opiates and other drugs (esp ALCHOHOL) *were* out and about in lenin's time, I do wonder at how feasible some of his ideas were with people wigged out on meth/crack hanging about. Is crackhead single mom on welfare... part of the bourgeoisie?
I know how the chinese solved their addictions-as-interference-with-governance problem, but is that approach justified? How exactly *does* a communist deal with people who don't *want* to come down from their stupendously irrational highs, and who are willing to exploit you and your ideals for a quick hit?
