  8. Friday is Infrastructure Friday.

So I have moved the boxes and glue website to a new CMS (Material for MkDocs - which is very awesome - @squidfunk) and I promise I will start / continue documenting boxes and glue as it gets more and more mature. Homepage is as before at boxesandglue.dev.

  9. ¡Diablos! Mi página web está construida con el tema Material que funciona sobre MkDocs. Lo amo, es muy potente. Y mientras la renderizaba me encontré con una advertencia en la terminal y un enlace a la siguiente página ⚠️:

  11. I've been testing #zensical since I will have to migrate off of #mkdocs and #mkdocsmaterial.

Across 3 sites, I only had to change one line in the yaml files and run `zensical` instead of `mkdocs`. Total potential migration time for 3 sites, 10 minutes.

Why potential and not complete? Pending blog and OpenAPI spec support. Once those are released, I can finish testing and migrate.

@squidfunk looking good so far. Thanks!

  16. So, remember how all the cool kids dumped #Sphinx and went for the shiny #MkDocs thing? And then used the shiny Material for MkDocs theme?

Well, apparently MkDocs 1.x is dead, and MkDocs 2.0 is coming with no support for plugins, incompatible theming system, closed contribution model and unclear licensing.

So which hype train are the cool kids jumping to these days?

  17. Oh look, a new player in the static site generator space: The "Material for MkDocs" team is saying goodbye to the unmaintained MkDocs base and are instead writing a new, modern SSG from scratch, called Zensical.

    squidfunk.github.io/mkdocs-mat

It doesn't have feature parity yet, but already looks quite capable. No blogging or custom plugins yet though, else I might've tried Zensical for the upcoming relaunch of my personal site.

  18. Thinking about transitioning my #blogging from #nikola to #mkdocs

Nikola is great but I've always felt like writing in Markdown is an also ran use case, as its native lingua franca is my long time nemesis #restructuredtext (Hate hate HATE! :) ).

mkdocs is built from the ground up to be super simple. Give it a pile of Markdown and it'll generate a site. There's a nice plugin for generating a blog:

  19. I checked how usable the #MaterialForMkDocs theme is in text-based webbrowers #lynx and #w3m. I'm impressed with a 'skip to content' to jump over the table of contents, good rendering of tables and footnotes working nicely. Unfortunately search doesn't work, as it depends on JavaScript and uses a popover. I already use the theme for documentation at work and am considering it for my personal website now. I can highly recommend it squidfunk.github.io/mkdocs-mat @squidfunk

  20. After several months with no time to devote to the project, I was able to get back to work on the #RSS plugin for #mkdocs (guts.github.io/mkdocs-rss-plug).

    Some of highlights:

    - support for JSON feed (RSS translation into JSON)
    - support for multiple instances (typically, a feed for your doc a feed for your blog within the same site base)
    - customizable output filenames
    - improved integration with social cards of #MaterialForMkdocs framework (cc @squidfunk )
    - modernized config to fit Mkdocs 1.6+

  21. We got some heat for warning our users that MkDocs 2.0 won't have a plugin system in Material for MkDocs.

The maintainer just confirmed it again and is actively working on MkDocs 2.0 – no plugins, by design. Markdown + templating only.

  22. "Oh~? It's already #SmileSunday or was that #SquidSunday? :9"

As usual, the Siren looks preeminently happy and cheerful, smiling in a way that seemed to suggest she was evaluating one for dissection and/or consumption.
