I reviewed the new Nicolas Cage western The Old Way. The story's familiar, but Cage & co-star Ryan Kiera Armstrong's performances elevate it & keep it entertaining. I also appreciated the film's take on Cage's character's emotional detachment & relationship w/ his daughter.

My last movie-related activity of 2022 was introducing my kids to one of my all-time favorite films: Disney's 1981 live-action superhero comedy Condorman.
It was a critical and commercial flop, and the fact that it's still not available on Disney+ suggests that Disney would rather forget it exists, but I wore out multiple VHS tapes of this film back in the day. It will always occupy a special place in my heart (and on the wall of our home theater room).

My kids were gifted Arcade 1Up's Jr. Arcade for Christmas. It's kid-sized, encased in thick plastic, w/ Pac-Man, Galaga & Dig-Dug installed & kid-friendly controls. (I liked the Die Hard reference my brother scrawled on the box under the wrapping paper.) I've included a pic w/ my Marvel Super Heroes cabinet for size reference.
Oh and pride dictated I set the high score on Dig-Dug to give them something to shoot for, obviously.

Happy to see so many nominees I chose for each category represented in the final list of Critics Choice Award nominations. (Of course, it helps that Everything Everywhere All At Once was my favorite film of 2022, and as such, I nominated it in one form or another in nearly every category.)

Day 7 of Amazon Prime Video's countdown calendar for award season was a really clever gift inspired by the charming documentary Good Night Oppy (which I highly recommend), about the Mars rover Opportunity: It's a container of "Moon Dust" (kinetic sand) with toy astronauts!

Day 4 of Amazon Studios' countdown calendar for award season was a gift inspired by the sci-fi series Outer Range: A stick of inky-black rock candy as dark as the strange portal at the center of the show's central mystery.
I really enjoyed the show, so this was a fun way to reference it. Well played, Amazon Studios. Well played.

Watched the Blues Clues movie with the kids this morning while recovering from the holiday and was thrilled to see this most excellent cameo from @alexwinter. Not only was it a nice surprise, but it earned me some cool points from the extended family when I told them I had a wonderful interview with him almost a decade ago about his Napster documentary, Downloaded. (Check it out if you haven't seen it.)

Received a wonderful promotional package for Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio last night. Along with discs for the film and its amazing score, it contained the official (and absolutely beautiful) making-of art book, a gorgeous hardcover copy of the script, and a Funko character figure from the film.
Oh, and some hot cocoa, too!
Thought I'd share some photos of this very cool surprise.
