A persuasive article but far from implementation.
I'd like to see an expert opinion.

  2. Thanks to @cosmos4u and @rdrimmel, who posted about an attempt to use 66 thousand Mira variable stars to map the Milky Way. There is little detail outside the bar but at least their bar angle of 20.2 degrees is consistent with the #GaiaDR3 results. (Top image has galactic centre up).

  4. Oh, you definitely want to click on the video link at the top of this article. (I've always said that the #GaiaMission was about more than just stars.)

  5. Science observations have ended for the #GaiaMission, but the satellite is undergoing some end-of-life testing. ESA has reoriented the satellite, so it is much brighter than usual, making it a possible target for small telescopes. Observers from around the world are sharing their images (see link below), and the image below is a rather nice example.

  6. The #GaiaMission, after "10.5 years of science operations, Gaia has made some three trillion observations of about two billion stars.." continues.

Observations have ended but data processing has not! Indeed, it takes years of processing to transform these observations into usable quantities (parallax, stellar magnitude, temperature, metallicity..). Next data release in 2026 will be based on half of these observations. The best is yet to come!

  7. A colleague pointed out to me that a wonderful video was made about #Albireo (my favorite hierarchical system), featuring a paper I published a few years ago. Great intro to a complicated system.

  10. Watching #WorldCupfifa2022 ? Then turn off the telly and #BoycottQatar2022. Over 1200 workers died in #Qatar in preparing for this event. Every game has blood on it. This goes way beyond worker safety, but is a sign of serious #HumanRights violations.

Want another reason? #Iran, whose government is threatening to execute over 10 thousand protesters in custody, is allowed to play. What's up #FIFA?

  12. So the #NASA historical investigation of James Webb came out yesterday. Seems we are still being asked to believe that he was a great administrator but had no knowledge of what was being done on his watch in the name of "policy" and somehow is exempt of all responsibility.

Also, yesterday was int'l #LGBTQSTEMDay. Not a coincidence, so #NASA leadership is slapping the #LGBTQ community in the face with this report. All in keeping with tradition it seems.

  14. RT @ESAGaia:
The famous bright gamma-ray burst, #GRB221009A, was further investigated and illuminated 20 dust clouds, as described in the thread below👇🏽 Even Gaia could not ignore this burst and measured the particle flux at the focal plane. More details:
