  2. New at Nature :: Spirit!

    "Trusting Inner Knowing"

In a world that trains us to listen to others first, how do we come to recognize and trust what we know in that still place inside? On laying down arms against ourselves--and against nature. Because what's inside us and what's outside us is all the same nature.

  8. "The Birrarung [River] is alive, has a heart, a spirit and is part of our Dreaming.”

Beautiful preamble to an Australia law to protect the river. Written in both English and the Traditional Owners’ language of Woi-wurrung. Framed in the worldview of the Traditional Owners.

The law doesn't give the river legal rights or representation, but it is a step toward rights of nature.

  9. The close-up bark of a ponderosa pine. One of my lifetime favorite trees. It grows all over the Rocky Mountains, and this one is in Colorado. Adapted to wildfire, with thick scaly bark that can slough off layers in the heat and still protect the tree.

Scratch the bark with a fingernail, bring your nose up close, and ahhhh! Butterscotch! Or vanilla! Or both! I can almost smell it now.

  11. “The one ‘dead’ tree was a feast of sacred geometry, a banquet of substrate and life.

“In the woods, everything is alive, everything is animate.”

Gorgeous essay in Emergence Magazine by Lucy Jones on what she calls “radical noticing.” So much to learn, so many possibilities for awe!

  16. Super grateful to historian Timothy Snyder for taking a sharp look at that #NYTimes article from Oct 2016 that announced the FBI found "no clear link" between Trump & Russia. In misleading readers the way it did, "it is suggestive of something malignant."

As Snyder says, only looking closely at those events gives us a chance to heal. So he analyzes some faulty #journalistic practices.

  21. This week's #mystery: I ran across the same quote—one I'd never heard before—in two very different corners of my world. "It is not down on any map; true places never are." MOBY-DICK, ch. 12 (tho Melville wrote, "It is not down IN any map..."). Found in the newsletter of a yoga teacher, where the words jumped out at me so hard I had to look them up. Then only 3 days later, in the luminous SONG FOR A WHALE by Lynne Kelly (the book is an utter treat!). Like a #secretmessage from the universe.

  22. How animal morality could help us chart a better path through a pandemic and take better care of the children (and ourselves).

Jung called it "Living Your Animal." It's latest on the Nature :: Spirit podcast.

  23. Hi, I do #naturewriting to highlight wonder & aliveness in the world. In a Nature-Spirit #podcast I use #history and #naturespirituality to make sense of current #ecocrises. My first book, Kissed by a Fox, won the WILLA Award in #creativenonfiction. It’s #memoir punctuated by cultural story—how Euro-world came to think of nature as lacking. My second book, Tamed by a Bear, is a journal of one year in a #spiritualpractice of #natureconnection. Centering more-than-human voices. #Introduction
