  9. Ok, so, apparently controversial take, but given it makes the rounds right now: I think it's fine that the BBC cybersecurity correspondent didn't know what PHP was before Wednesday.

The role of a correspondent isn't in any way technical, it shouldn't be.

It's a communications role with the target of the BBC audience and for the kind of cybersecurity topics the BBC covers as part of the normal program. Individual vulnerabilties absolutely shouldn't be part of that in any normal year, arguably it shouldn't have even become a topic in this specific case.

It's also not a role that creates new conclusions or even assess things. It's a role that summarizes & explains to a lay audience that has no idea what a web server is. You can absolutely do that without knowing all the things beforehand. I'm not gonna go as far as saying existing technical knowledge is more of a hindrance (as it makes you assume your audience may know something which they don't) here as there are plenty of great IT security communicators out there, but you know... it's not the thing you should prioritize with your skill points.
