  3. Is there a setting to stop #Mastodon #Timeline and Live Feed from auto updating in browser? Toots are scrolling too fast to read. Surely can't be right. Never looked at them much before.

  7. Large numbers of black backed gulls effortlessly gliding westwards into the wind along the Seven Sisters cliffs, East Sussex, today. Usually only ever see one or two among all the herring gulls. Is this a migration?

  9. Up on Marine Parade, heard that distinctive peep. Looked down and sure enough, three #oystercatchers landed on the beach right where I was heading for a #swim. Great to see #waders in the city with turnstones too recently. Down on the pebbles, crow, herring gulls and two oystercatchers all in line but blinking camera refused to focus. Another crow swooped down and shooed the waders off low over the water towards the marina.

  10. More identification at local grocery. In the past, 'normal' was the default differentiator from the similar shaped brown chestnut mushrooms. But now it seems to be a whole nuther entity in it's own right.

  12. @caseynewton If you struggle to quit Twitter maybe start with #MastodonMonday when you toot exclusively except to tweet that you're here for the day. We're more likely to find each other if we're all here at the same time.

  13. @JamesGleick It's the network effect. Birdsite has the mass. I suspect many want to jump but want others to already be here. It's understandable. They come here and can't find the people they used to follow, either because they're not here or because search isn't great. I'm suggesting #MastodonMonday as a day willing birders only toot here and tweet to say that's what they're doing. Concentrate traffic, build connections and familiarity over time while maintaining awareness there.

  14. Finally, I admit I hover between both. Still too many accounts to let go of. So to build some network effect here I suggest a weekly #MastodonMonday when birds on the fence commit to toot here only (except to tweet that they're here for the day). A regular change of scene to maintain awareness there and build familiarity & connection here while adding basic functionality to make this place, not more friendly which it already is, but more user-friendly for those who need encouragement. 4/4

Realistically there are going to be big numbers of Twitter holdouts, myself included to some extent, because of the network effect. Sheer weight of numbers. It's hard for many to break completely. As an interim idea how about promoting #MastodonMonday? A day each week where tweeps accept to post exclusively on Mastodon. It could help create more to engage with and over time lead more people to hang out here more.
