I miss contrast. Just contrast. Decently contrasty text, captions that always have black borders so that they could be read over any color or pattern, etc.

I'm so sick of seeing #FFFFFF white captions above #EEEEEE white regions of images/videos.

This was fixed in the 80s.

And don't even get me started on active window decorations.

after a quick check with strace was not immediately helpful I hit upon using gdk-pixbuf-query-loaders. Using it on my file ended up outputting:

g_module_open() failed for /home/joncruz/Amiga/ilbm_pixbuf_loader.so: /home/joncruz/Amiga/ilbm_pixbuf_loader.so: undefined symbol: gdk_pixbuf_get_n_channels

So that's a handy tool when working on loaders
