@jimsalter They're going into #TrueNAS along with some other long-in-the-tooth drives. While they fail fairly regularly, (1/year?) they're cheap to replace. I always have a hot spare or two.

@jimsalter Who would have guessed that using #mercurial in 2026 would have the extra benefit of sloperators don't know how to use it 🤣

@jimsalter Wonder how much will just go into heating vs charging.
There was one night, going at 12A@120VAC, we didn't realize it was dropping to -28C outside... woke up to ~100 watt hours added. That's watt hours, not kilowatt hours.
At least it made the DCFC kick in at full rate when I got there.
(#F150Lightning XR for the record.)

@jimsalter Really appreciate you making the distinction on the latest @25admins that Windows Professional isn't nearly as encumbered with ad and spyware as Home is. I'm a HUGE fan of technical accuracy even when discussing preferences, and this seems both HUGE and non obvious.
I think that IF the amazingly awesome Linux on the desktop experience isn't for you for whatever reason (and there ARE a few despite what some Linux folks may think) Windows 11 Profvessional + #wsl2 can make for an effective, compelling and almost outrageously convenient Linux development environment.

Of course the topic had to be storage. That's #kismet mate 😆

Wishful thinking. Billions and billions spent, terabytes of data, thousands of searchers, decades of nitpicking study, and not one empty matchbook, not a sniff, not an atom out of place in a very very big Petrie dish.
Hopeful sure, even excited for the search, but the unlikeliness, the fragility, of this gossamar exception, is also fascinating and enervating.
And frightening. Its really very easy for a planet to fail.

@jimsalter I must admit I REALLY enjoyed listening to you give @allanjude some friendly side eye over the #HexOS
#ZFS AnyRaid changes on the latest @25admins :)It's an interesting example of why the show makes for enlightening and entertaining listening even as someone who will very likely never be in a position where I need to professionally administer self maintained enterprise class storage.

@jimsalter Would the… #WhitePower hashtag be appropriate?

@jimsalter When it was just 'Home' that was going that way, I wasn't too surprised, but now even Pro has all the stuff you don't want. And Group Policy lags further and futher behind being able to clean and prevent all this crud.
If more proof was needed, they've started doing crap like this in Windows Server for *(&^ sake....
#preachingToTheChoir I guess 🙂

@jimsalter Sounds great!
I've always loved the way #syncoid goes the extra mile ^H^H^H^H percent or two
-
It's been griping me for YEARS that #syncoid can only give a progress bar for the CURRENT replication task, not for the entire job (when it involves multiple datasets).
The problem is that it relies on an external program for the progress meter, which means you can only meter the one task at a time.
That's gonna change real soon. We gonna have simultaneous progress bars for the current task, and for the ENTIRE set of tasks:

Today's one liner: zfs list -t snapshot -o name -s creation | tail -n 1 | sed 's/zpool\/home@//g'. This is to ensure I backup from the latest snapshot in my borg backup setup. Had to revamp the script after migrating to #sanoid developed by @jimsalter . Maybe now I can get my head around zfs replications then setup syncoid. Wait I got to do test restores from the backups. Derp.

Today's shenanigans: digging into the behaviour and millisecond intricacies of #sanoid and how it bugs out with with our database quiescing scripts.
@jimsalter Have you ever considered a per-execution or per-dataset pre/post hook (as opposed to per-snapshot)?

@lakeswimmer I use #rsnapshot. Been using it for years and it works great. I'm also one of the project maintainers so am biased.
In a brand new installation where everything used #ZFS (and really, everything *should* use ZFS - if it's not properly supported in your OS the OS is faulty and you should use a different one) then these days I'd use zfs send/recv, wrapped in #sanoid / #syncoid - https://github.com/jimsalterjrs/sanoid
-
I just had to restore a folder from backup, and it turned out, that my regular #ZFS snapshot service (Sanoid) was not running, I must've stopped the timer some time ago and forgot. But the nightly backups were still running, so the actual lost work is not that much. Test your #backup!
Ps. Thanks for @jimsalter and all other contributors for the amazing tool of #Sanoid and #Syncoid (which saved me this time)!
