  6. Yep. It works just as well in shell 49 as it did in 48.

(I'm already running a fork to fix a bug in the battery monitor.)

  7. to follow up on this, my bench supply reported 8 mA of current for just the LED side of the switch.

so guessing at the forward voltage of the green LED, there is probably a 1.2 kΩ resistor in the switch, or anything from 1 - 1.5k given the likely (in)accuracy of my supply.

still not relevant to the overall goal!

  21. our regular cat sitter (who we love ❤️) doesn't know how to care for cast iron, and I usually come home to one abomination or another (once the pan was in the dishwasher!) and I have to re-season it.

this time I used two coats of avocado oil because I didn't have any rapeseed oil handy, and it turned out SO WELL. the surface is smooth and hard!

it did smoke quite a bit during the l process, I had to open the back door to ventilate.

  22. Riding in this car across the countryside in Oman, I just had an insight that is a new argument in the little-endian / big-endian discussion:

    Arabic numerals are little-endian!

A question I sometimes ask myself: why are our written numbers big-endian? That is, why start with the larger valued numbers on the left?

I confess, network byte order notwithstanding, that little-endian seems more natural for information processing because, if the number is written in a decimal-coded array, the array index corresponds to the power-of-10 (starting with zero, as God and Dennis Ritchie intended).

Our numbering system is sometimes called Arabic numerals, and this is because base-10 numbers were invented in Arabia.

What direction is Arabic script? Right to left! In the context of western script, our numbers are written backwards!

  27. Update on learning new programming skills using qwen25-coder. Its great for general questions about javascript, but terrible at helping me learn d3 force directed graphs. It just makes stuff up!

My hunch is that there is comparatively little d3 example code for it to learn from, especially on this niche topic.

So I've resorted to the tried-and-true method: slowly picking apart examples, building up my own mental model, and then testing that model by writing some code.

  29. I've been messing around with running LLMs locally on my laptop and seeing how they perform, subjectively, and not very systematically.

I've been using the ellama emacs module, which makes things like summary and code completion very easy.

I'm using llama3.2, which is quite a bit smaller than llama3.1, and runs very easily on my Framework 13, with AMD Ryzen CPU.
