I’ll second all of this. PHP is a great example of how great people can do great work with flawed tools. And aren’t all of our tools flawed? Isn’t all good engineering this way? Isn’t the last mile of all truly good work a human solving the problems they have with the choices they have? Shouldn’t we tip our cap to every human who sees the work through that arduous last mile? I certainly do, especially this week.

Yes, important to note that the plot is entirely from a Confederate POV. It’s a throwaway plot — not as problematically soaked in Confederate Lost Cause nostalgia as, say, Gone With the Wind, merely an absurdity situated in Civil War Georgia — but it’s definitely one of those films you see for the filmmaking and not for the story. And it’s definitely one to skip if you’re not willing to compartmentalize that.

The lesson of the previous post is that real actual voter suppression doesn’t actually look like high-tech vote swapping that the hero of the movie stop by watching the sinister computer screen and then hacking something.
It looks like crappy processes with crappy interfaces and crappy accountability whose purpose (in a POSIWID sense) is to confuse, thwart, vex, bamboozle, and exhaust voters.

I’ve heard reports exactly like this in • every • single • election • since 2004. And every time, when somebody finally manages to get to the bottom of it, it turns out the culprit is garbage UI design — not the machine secretly changing votes (because why would it •show• the user if it’s actually cheating?!).
But these breathless stories about touchscreen voting aren’t going die unless touchscreen voting itself dies — because it’s a terrible idea.
Paper ballots, marked directly by the voter themselves, validated and counted in an optical scanner. It’s not rocket science, folks.

And Rubin is completely correct: if you’re looking to make money through business, then Trump is an •enormous• risk to your wealth. The only way to enrich yourself in his world is as an authoritarian lackey, a loyal vassal of a mafia state. He’ll tank this wealth-pumping juggernaut we call “the economy.” Even if he’s gone in 2.5 years, the damage he does to civil society will harm business interests for…a generation if we’re •lucky•.

More capitalists freaking out about Trump would be extremely helpful right now — even if it’s for sad reasons.
If the oligarchs decide that Trump and fascism are a bad investment after all, I’m all for it. Doesn’t mean they’re redeemed and we’re friends now. Just means I’m all for it. I’d happily take that win.

Still, I have to applaud Rubin. There are people who will reflexively, aggressively stop listening the second anyone makes a comparison to the rise of the Nazis — but who •will• hear a warning about investment hazard and economic damage.
Rubin is speaking to •them•, not to me. And I’m glad he is. Somebody sure needs to.

I had to laugh-groan almost out loud at this passage:

My dude…. OK, yes, it will definitely “eventually resolve itself” — if you also include the possibility of it doing so in the way that the collapse of democracy in Germany in the 1930s eventually “resolved itself.”
