This whole @getsentry thing and #sourcewashing in general feels like folks who didnt know differences between permissive license and copyleft license & how it effects their business.
Not now when they have $$$ & knowledge about it. But in the beginning. Now that they are big and have $$$, they can afford to create a new license & not give freedoms as per #OSS.
Its very unlikely that they would've done this in the beginning with no reputation.
I wonder, is OSS license literacy that low?

New software license by @getsentry : Functional Source License (FSL) https://blog.sentry.io/introducing-the-functional-source-license-freedom-without-free-riding/
A "Delayed Open Source Publication" (DOSP) license like BUSL, but makes some opinionated choices to ease compliance: 2-year period to open source (Apache 2.0 or MIT) and clarifications around allowed purposes.
The discussion happened in the open: https://github.com/getsentry/fsl.software/issues/4

@linux_mclinuxface @megmac They (@getsentry) are free to set a shorter time span though, 4 years is the max that BSL allows
In this specific scenario #Codecov has set it to 3 years, as 2026-06-31 is set as the change date: https://github.com/codecov/self-hosted/commit/7f644d0f6ad537ee4bc6b1b8a3b8a16efc343015 (corrected an hour ago by head of open source at Sentry)
Also:
> usage is limited to non-production use, or production use within the limits of the “Additional Use Grant”
With it in this case being: Don’t use this work to launch a competing SaaS

OK, so you have a website. People visit it.
Their browsers have extensions.
Their extensions throw #JavaScript errors!
How do you filter these annoying not-related-to-your-application errors out of your exception tracking?
We use #GetSentry and there's so much noise at hundreds-to-thousands of concurrent users that it's a bit exhausting.

#Licencing #FLOSS #freesoftware #FSL
Have not heard of the FSL licence before. It looks interesting and useful.

I’ve been bitten by the “last call” before…
I don’t have infinite free time to engage on these issues, especially when feedback isn’t reflected in a change.

”available under the same BSL license as Sentry’s core repos” https://about.codecov.io/blog/codecov-is-now-open-source/
Been lovely to see #Codecov evolve ever since they joined @getsentry and nice to see them using the same #BSLLicense when they decided to now release their product as kind of #OpenSource 👏
-
@galdor Let’s not conflate the #SSPL license that Elastic switched to with the #BSLLicense.
The SSPL is an #AGPL license modified to prohibit competition for eternity.
The BSL is a license that turns into a #GPL2 compatible license within at most 4 years and which the creators, @mariadb, created to ensure their proprietary extensions would be as close to OSS as possible and guaranteed to eventually become full OSS.
Likewise, @getsentry defaults to non-BSL: https://open.sentry.io/licensing/

It's official, Codecov is joining Sentry!
What do #test #analytics have to do with #appmonitoring?
We focus on #software #outages & when everything goes wrong it's often because we didn't test or #monitor our #code.
Codecov + Sentry *can* help you fix this
