An Albatross Dive
Photographer Nicolás Muñoz García enticed a curious black-browed albatross to chase his camera underwater in this award-winning video. As the albatross swims closer, its face appears above the water, showing a fish’s eye view of refraction. Then it dives, beak-first, toward the camera. Watch how it uses its powerful feet to propel itself down for a closer look. In the full video, you can see how bubbles get entrained into vortices shed off the foot’s stroke. Even though these birds are known for their soaring ability, they’re clearly powerful underwater, too. (Video and image credit: N. Muñoz García/APA; via Colossal)
