Dear #reteogaming #retrocomputing tooters; I recently got these two Philips CRTs. The Anubis and the Discoverer. Both work well but have faulty remote controls (might be able to fix them). Do you know; are Philips TVs like Sony in that they kept the IR communication standard the same over time and a modern remote would still work on these older models of TV?

On a annoncé, mardi 4 février, la mort de Stéphane Picq, compositeur de musiques de jeux vidéo connu entre autres pour ses BO de jeux Cryo dans les années 1990, dont "Lost Eden" et l'album "Dune Spice Opera" (remastérisé en 2024), mais aussi "Atlantis, secrets d'un monde oublié", BO co-composée avec Pierre Estève que j'adore et que j'utilise pour mes listes de musique d'ambiance de "Kosmos". Merci à lui pour ces heures et ces heures d'écoute merveilleuses. Son nom doit trouver une place dans l'histoire de la musique des jeux vidéo.

Can anyone identify this type of mains switch (left pic)? It's inside a Jaleco Arm Champs 2 arcade machine that I am working on repairing. I've already serviced the power chain and measured all the correct voltages (right pic). It looks like there's a block that will come free somehow and I guess those are smoothing capacitors on both sides #arcade #arcaderepair #retrogaming #retrocomputing

So Black Knight 2K has gone back to the arcade and we now have another pinball machine (Bally Radical, 1990) and an upright arcade cabinet (Jaleco Arm Champs 2, 1992) to fix. Radical has an electrical fault where one of the aux board fuses keeps blowing. Arm Champs 2 looks like it needs quite a bit of work, the CRT is gone but replaced with a TFT VGA monitor and the power driver board seems to have a lot of corrosion on it. This is interesting! Possible Planet 9 candidate found in two far-infrared sky surveys; IRAS (1983) and AKARI (2006). Obviously this is not a confirmation and more observations are needed to confirm it. The whole story of #VirginOrbit is such a massive shame. Look how hopeful this video was, the possibilities were endless. New jobs were to be created, new science and technology careers for young people would come to #Cornwall. For generations anyone wanting to follow a technical career had to leave. Maybe now things would start to change? Then on 9 January 2023 the first launch from Newquay failed to reach orbit. Game over. They later declared Chapter 11 bankruptcy on 4 April 2023. Sad times 😔

It was a #DeadMail day! Arriving in the post was #DavesPick Volume 46: the #GratefulDead's 1972-09-09 show at the Hollywood Palladium.
I also received the 2023 Bonus Disc with fragments of two other September 1972 shows: 1972-09-19 (Jersey City) and 1972-09-03 (Boulder).
Fun fact: I could have gotten my hands on a ticket to the Jersey City show, but couldn't afford it because all my spare cash went to chemistry, biology and calculus college textbooks.

Just took a trip down memory lane, back to where it all began for me. On the RM Nimbus 186 PC circa 1989. Since they rolled MESS into the main MAME code stream you can also use it to emulate retro computers like the Nimbus. Picture below is a screenshot showing a quick recursive program that repeatedly draws an ever increasing square with a 10 degree rotation between each. I just finished N.K. Jemisin's Broken Earth trilogy, and WOW. A lot there on pretty much every level. Far Sector is one of my favorite graphic stories, but this was my first encounter with her prose. Great and original writer. Got a lot to catch up on now. #jemisin
