Recently, I started seeing, in some of my news feeds, warnings about parasites in the water in my neighboring town.
They were worded in such a way that one might assume that they were true.
The town is between 6 and 12 miles from me.
My town water comes from an aquifer.
Because I don't know if their water is aquifer or pumped in, I couldn't verify if the report was accurate or scam.
Today, in my feed, I was told that the water in my town has parasites.
I worked in water and wastewater utilities for over 10 years.
I checked the most recent water quality report.
As I suspected, Joshua Tree has some of the BEST water in Southern California. (And, based on personal knowledge, residue and taste, I completely agree.).
Here's the thing...
(And I have a fair amount of experience with this exact situation)
There are basically only three standard sources of water for any municipality, no matter how small or large. Or a combination of any of the three. (Several water districts in San Diego use a combination)
1. Surface water, ie rivers or lakes (including aqueducts)
2. Aquifers, ie underground water tables
3. Mechanical, ie desalinization and "toilet to tap"
Of the 3, aquifers almost NEVER have parasites, because they traditionally recharge through percolating, the water filters down through the earth. The only way that parasites can be introduced is through direct well injection (water is pumped into an existing well that directly connects to the aquifer) and if the source is contaminated, the parasites can get into the water source. However, we are not, currently, doing direct injections.
I might have believed it possible that Yucca Valley has parasites in the water, if any of their sources are surface water, but, based on what I KNOW to be true, I highly doubt it.
Joshua Tree, on the other hand, I am 99% certain of.Bottom line, if your local news feed says that your water supply is contaminated with parasites, talk to someone LOCAL.
