Thanks to the incredible work of @[email protected] , we have made significant progress on converting Pandora's Tale Wiki to git.
You can now browse the new Pandora's Tale Wiki in geminispace, atgemini://pandorastale.average.name
Thanks to the Smolnet Portal, you can also view it by proxy in a web browser:
https://portal.mozz.us/gemini/pandorastale.average.name/Pandora%27s%2520Tale%2520Wiki.gmi
The gemtext renders and the links work (unlike viewing the files in Forgejo).
There are still a few tasks left before the transition to git is complete.
1) I want to set things up so that you can view the wiki in a web browser without relying on a third-party proxy service. I haven't yet figured out whether I will accomplish this by
a) Converting gmi->html locally on my computer and pushing it somewhere, or
b) Trying to do the conversion on Average's server.
2) I'm going to wait for Xan to release another chapter, so that I can see how hard it is to update the new wiki.
3) After that I will manually check every page to see if there are major formatting errors.
Only after completing all of these steps will I shut down the original MediaWiki version of PTW. Until then, it will remain accessible at https://pandorastale.wiki .

Does anyone here know #pygments or #chroma lexer stuff well enough to tell me how (if at all?) one can mark up stuff in *multiple ways at once*?
For instance the following line:
# foo **bar**
The entire line should be a "Heading", the first two characters and the stars should be "Keyword"s, and the bar should be "GenericStrong".
I can't for the life of me figure out how that's possible to achieve.

Awhile ago, I announced a plan to convert Pandora's Tale Wiki from MediaWiki to git. The main reasons are
1) In an era of increasing censorship, a wiki about queerness and fighting fascism should be available in a format that is easy to edit offline.
2) I think it will be easier to maintain.
Today, I have taken the first public step in that process. You can see a git-ified version of the wiki here:
https://git.average.name/1something/PTW
Hosting is provided by @[email protected] : That's right, a Helper is hosting the wiki about Helpers. She might, or might not, provide our permanent home.
Two things need to happen before I can declare this version of PTW the "main" one. First, I need to verify that this format is actually easier to maintain. That means waiting for @[email protected] to release a new chapter so I can see how hard it is to update.
Second, (almost?) every page currently has formatting errors due to the conversion. I need to fix all of them.
Until I complete both of those steps, the MediaWiki version will remain at https://pandorastale.wiki .

Notice something new on the Pandora's Tale Wiki Wiki home page?
That's right, we have a poll!
Inspired by polls on Super Mario Wiki, we will periodically ask you, the readers, assorted questions about the Pandora's Tale-verse! When the poll concludes, it will be replaced by another poll, and the results will be moved to the new Poll Archive page.
This new feature is thanks to @[email protected] and @[email protected] . Awhile back, I started whining on Miraheze Discord and Rainverse Matrix that there were inadequate polling options available on Miraheze. In response to my whining, Claire made a whole new MediaWiki extension, and Average Helper and Claire did the hard work to get it installed on Miraheze.
I'm also ready to preemptively announce plans for the Pandora's Tale Volume 2 Character Tournament. The character tournament will ask you to vote for your favorite character in a series of matches, with winning characters advancing to the next round until only one remains. The tournament will not begin until all chapters from Volume 2 are released, but when it does, you'll be able to vote directly from the wiki home page!

In response to Beth's whining, Claire made a whole new MediaWiki extension, and Average Helper and Claire did the hard work to get it installed on Miraheze.
I'm also ready to preemptively announce plans for the Rain Character Tournament 3 and the My Impossible Soulmate Character Tournament 1. Each character tournament will ask you to vote for your favorite character in a series of matches, with winning characters advancing to the next round until only one remains.
Neither tournament will happen for awhile: The next Rain Character Tournament will likely begin several months after the release of Rain Volume 7, while the first MIS Character Tournament will not begin until after MIS Volume 1 is released. But we can announce that when these character tournaments do happen, you'll be able to vote straight from the wiki home page.

Eight years ago today, our former admin Miiohau founded Rain Wiki on Fandom. One year ago, the wiki was mostly abandoned, as Fandom's evil behaviour had pushed the community away.
In March of this year, @AwesomeGamer forked Rain Wiki onto @[email protected]. The title was changed to Rainverse Wiki and expanded to cover My Impossible Soulmate, and we moved to the domain https://rainverse.wiki, thanks to @[email protected]. In the past four months, our small team revitalized the wiki with more than 10,000 edits and more than 1,000 new content articles. We now have articles with transcripts for every page of both Rain and and My Impossible Soulmate, thanks to @[email protected].
As we enter our first full year of independence, there is always more to do to improve the wiki, but we are doing better than ever before. Let's have a great Year Nine. #Rain #RainComic #MyImpossibleSoulmate #Rainverse #RainverseWiki #Miraheze #MediaWiki #Wiki #IndieWiki #WikisWorld -
CW: long-ish thought
normalize rewriting a piece of software you like and/or have a small beef with. you don't even have to publish the code, just trying to do it better is a fun and rewarding exercise, and you learn a lot!
don't let an LLM do any of it for you, either. learn how the boilerplate works, and make it better. plan out your architecture, find out why your architecture works the way it does, and what you would do better next time. come up with (deterministic) templates that help you get started faster next time, using tools you understand.
bonus points for making it work safely on as many clients as possible. try building it to work without javascript! it's just some server-side logic, you really aren't gonna get to a scale that needs web-app frontends anyway.
it won't be good, or it will. and that's ok.
obligatory: time willing, of course. hard to have enough free time and motivation in this economy to do fun stuff for yourself :neofox_up_sleep:

recommendations for Matrix clients for Linux that aren't NeoChat or Element? Ideally something that I can get via Flatpak or RPM and works well under Fedora+KDE, but I'm not opposed to weirder installation procedures (within reason, lol). Bonus points for non-Electron.
NeoChat is fine, but it seems to miss events, so when I wake my computer in the morning I find the latter half of a conversation without context (older messages do appear, just not recent ones since sleeping), and I need to read the first half on my phone :neofox_woozy:
