  1. @RachelFriend Good luck Rachel!! Hoping the world leaders will be thinking of #civicIntelligence, how to get people *more* engaged with democracy — not less!

  2. Last flight home is out of #LondonHeathrow. Didn’t get outside the airport but did enjoy an Elderflower tonic which was delightful.

I’m looking around the gate area and I’d say there are 150 ppl in my vicinity — only 1 wearing a mask. Same at the conference, v low #MaskingUp among 1000s there. Yet there was someone hack-coughing on virtually every bus, train, flight, & conference hall I visited.

So a friendly reminder to all: #TAKEaCOVIDtestBEFOREtheTURKEY!

  3. Paris up now talking about geofencing for their scooters too. Wanted to force scooters to be parked in certain zones. 6 scooters max go a zone. It’s imperfect. Started in 2020. I used shared e-scooters in 2019, and scooters were being liberally tossed into the Seine it was a bummer.

Next speaker also taking about scooter parking & geofencing. #SCEWC22 #TMWC22

  4. Ok now we know who this user is. Onto safety analysis. 6/10 don’t feel safe! That’s true scooters & bikes. ESP when sharing w cars.

What can we do about that metric? Users want:
    Secure parking
    Better education
Network improvements w shared e-scooters. Quality instead of length of network. With full connectivity. Eg no breaks where you have to hop off and walk next to scooter. I hate dismount zones. #SCEWC22 #TMWC22

  5. Where do these users come from? What mode are they shifting from? Ideally some want these users to be ppl shifting from cars. Speaker notes there is almost an “Obsession with this indicator” 86% come from other sustainable modes. Like walking bussing. Not cars. But in Barcelona it’s dense and ppl don’t drive as much. Don’t obsess over shifting from cars. There are other benefits.

40% do however combine with public transit. Nice. #SCEWC22 #TMWC22

  6. These coalition members want consistent rules across Europe for micromobility users. Speed limits, helmets, no twin-riding (I think that’s what she said?), easy to follow rules, enforcement of rules. Sober riding campaign. We struggled in Boulder with e-scooter adoption bc some of the accidents are so catastrophic. We will get an update next month to see how the pilot went. Amazing that Europe trying for single set of rules. Can Mayor Pete roll this out for US?

  7. Ok micromobility is up. We are immersed in one of biggest challenges & changes for next century. Pandemic accelerated change, forced decisionmakers to create change. There’s a coalition in Europe of biggest microbiology providers. “Europe is built around cars.” That feels like crazy talk to me as US feels so much worse than Europe in terms of car centric ness. #SCEWC22 #TMWC22

  8. There’s a 1/2 hour gap now. I might fall asleep in my chair… But I’ll be up in 23 minutes for my final session series: micro-mobility safety. And after that, speaking of Gaudi, hopefully off to find the #ParkGüell before the sun sets.

  9. Gonna be hard to top the last guy.

But let’s give it a try with last mile logistics. “Stop taking about it. Do it now. Make mistakes and learn. Cities shouldn’t talk about setting a target for 2030.” Make a solution and let’s get to implementing. #SCEWC22 #TMWC22

  10. John wasn’t super into bikes. HA But liked the human-centered symbolism / anti industrial aspect of the bike vs car. So that’s why it’s in the pic.

Stretch of a title but the title got me in the door and it was a FAB lecture. So it worked out for all of us imo.

    #SCEWC22

Radically consider what you’ve been taught about mobility if you want radical change. Yeah! And choose the words you use in this space carefully.

  11. Old streets are like old forests. Here we go! Streets used to be for gathering bartering AND transit. Then 100 years ago - THE CAR. Thousands died in streets hit by cars in 1920s. Seen as UNJUST. Then US 1930s we created the “traffic engineer” — efficiency and optimization instead of injustice of kids dying. Speed ppl from A to B. Eradicate the other purposes for the street. Painful retrospective. #SCEWC22

  12. “The main problems are in cities. But so are the solutions.”

“National governments are getting in the way of cities. This needs to change.” Also 💯 #SCEWC22

  13. “There is always resistance to change. Push through it esp if you’re in government.” #SCEWC22

    💯!

  14. Next up: round table on “How tech can push inclusion.” Wow there’s a woman onstage with FAB pink and lavender hair. One panelist is named Nuria! Boulder’s Nuria @nprivera explained before I got here that this a v popular name in this region. (Catalonia). #SCEWC22

“Tech by default creates inequalities” bc it’s not free. Gotta proactively push it out to ppl who will otherwise be left behind. Ppl creating the tech don’t often factor in equity early enough.

  15. This general session is on #UrbanAirMobility or UAM for short. Speaker notes that there is an allegation of “social washing” by promoting medical use cases in UAM. I mean she did just draw me in with that exact scenario 🤷🏻‍♀️. #SCEWC22 #TMWC22

  16. First session I’m at is a woman joining virtually and she’s talking about using drones to facilitate vaccines & getting urgent blood samples in Eg Rwanda. #TransportDrones #SCEWC22 #TMWC22

  17. I’m obv most excited today for “why was John Lennon in bed with a bicycle?” #SCEWC22 #TMWC22

And I have a new blister. Sign of a morning well spent, imo.

  18. There are tons of ppl milling about outside today and they’ve stopped checking badges as diligently. Free for all??

    Either way let’s get learning #SCEWC22 #TMWC22!

  19. Last day of the #SCEWC22 conference! I’m up early to try to do the briefest of sightseeing while I’m here in Barcelona. Never been before. At a metro stop rn and my impression is that Barcelona residents are not super early risers. Platform is empty. Good for them, my kinda town.

  20. Closing out today’s #SCEWC22 updates with a link to Kyiv’s muni app, which i mentioned yesterday. They had a cool demo of it which highlighted before & after the war started in terms of what they were already doing with the app (some very cool stuff!) and how they added to it (Eg incoming bomb alerts). apps.apple.com/us/app/kyiv-dig

  21. Embodied carbon - full life cycle of a building and it’s materials. Seems that this is the sponginess we are about here. Big expense on embodied carbon is front end of a building. It also matters WHEN you emit. Sort of like investments — builds on self over time. So better to emit in 39 years then now. We build a new Paris every week (globally). Yikes. #SCEWC22

  22. This panel calling out fossil fuels & hoping for some strong calls to action out of Egypt. Planetary survival on the line.

Speaker addressing “Why did we name this bauhaus? It’s so European and so German.” Need to collaborate with Eg countries in Africa / “global south”- so what’s up w/ this name? We should not impose a European view. Colonizing. — I’m not sure she has really explained why they chose this name. #SCEWC22

  23. High wattage urbanist panel being introduced. They’re all into the #NewEuropeanBauhaus. It seems like The Coolest Kids are all in Egypt this week — but the runner ups are in this bauhaus club. #SCEWC22

  24. Barcelona radical project removed 60 blocks (60? Is that right?) from car use. 60?

Paper partition shelters for Ukrainian refugees. By a famous architect. Stand with Ukraine. This is part of the bauhaus. Omg this gal fit a very lot into 10 minutes. #NewEuropeanBauhaus #SCEWC22 #TMWC22
