Good news, we should not freeze to death this winter, even if #PortlandGeneralElectric leaves us without power for days! And the chimney should not fall off the house quite as easily now too!

Anyone have any recommendations for a queer/trans friendly kendo or fencing club in Portland, OR? I'm interested in doing either (or, with infinite time, both) and now that I have more mobility, I can probably actually even get to one! Recommendations appreciated!

#Protesters rally at #PortlandME Jetport against #AveloAirlines' #ICEDeportation flights
July 14, 2025
PORTLAND, Maine (WGME) -- "A group gathered outside the Portland Jetport on Saturday to rally against Avelo Airlines for working with ICE.
"Since May, the airline has been carrying out deportation flights in Arizona for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
"Shortly after starting their flights for ICE, #Avelo began offering nonstop flights between #NewHavenCT, and Portland.
" 'Whether or not it’s a public airport, we don't believe that anyone who’s violating anyone else’s #HumanRights, any business should be allowed to continue and be allowed to receive incentives from the airport,' said Rachel Weinstein, a protester at the #PortlandJetport.
"A spokesperson for Avelo says their #HomelandSecurity charters are only based out of Arizona and are not affiliated with Portland Jetport commercial services."

Radius scrap metal yard ordered to submit a fire prevention plan — appeals it
"Two months after two massive and preventable scrap metal fires at #RadiusRecycling in 2024 sent plumes of #ToxicFumes and metal particulates over North Portland and Linnton, the North Peninsula Review discovered that the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality sent an enforcement letter to the company alleging that Radius was operating an unpermitted solid waste disposal site and assessing a $29,580 civil penalty. The notice included an order to submit a fire prevention plan by September 30, 2024. "

Judge orders release of #PortlandME teen from #ICE facility after 6 months
PORTLAND (WGME) – "A Portland teen who has been held in a Texas ICE facility for more than six months is reportedly set to be released by Friday.
That's according to Maine Congresswoman Chellie Pingree, who traveled to the facility this week to demand that ICE release 19-year-old #OliviaAndre .
[...]
"She is originally from the Democratic Republic of the Congo and was a first-year nursing student in Portland when she was taken into custody.
"#DHS previously said Andre is in the United States illegally but didn’t explain why the rest of her family was released and she wasn't.
"Pingree called the conditions at the facility inhumane, and Andre's lawyer says her physical and mental wellbeing deteriorated from not having access to clean drinking water, palatable food and appropriate medical care.

#PortlandME - #WarblerWalks at Evergreen Cemetery
Free, no registration required.
May 4-8 & May 11-15, 7-9 am
672 Stevens Ave, Portland, ME 04103"Join Maine Audubon’s Staff Naturalist Doug Hitchcox, for free bird walks at Evergreen Cemetery in Portland during the peak of warbler migration. These walks will take place each weekday (Monday through Friday) from the 4th through the 15th.
Meet at the south end of the duck ponds (map) and we’ll spend two hours (7-9 am) birding along the paths and trails of Evergreen. Come out for a morning of watching some of North America’s most beautiful birds as they stop to feed in this city-surrounded oasis, before moving on to their breeding grounds.
Most days we only walk ~0.4 miles and stay on the dirt road and trails. Conditions vary based on recent weather, but trails can be quite muddy after rain and some places can have exposed roots to step over. There is a public restroom (vault toilet; no running water) nearby. Accessible by Greater Portland Metro Bus 9A/B. We will have loaner binoculars available.
Maine Audubon strives to provide inclusive and accessible programs for all members of the community. If you require accommodations to participate in this program, please email [email protected]. Maine Audubon can best meet the needs of requests submitted at least seven days before the event start date."
