My colleague Tyler Ozvat recently posted this NMR spectrum of tartrazine (FD&C yellow #5). The hydrazone NH proton has a chemical shift of 17.8! Don't the textbooks say the most deshielded protons are carboxyl and aldehyde? #NMR #NMRchat #benchtopNMR #chemistry

Here is a 125 MHz proton #NMR spectrum of undiluted 94 proof bourbon. My role at #QMagnetics is #physics and engineering, not #chemistry, so when I make spectra they are usually of things I find lying around at home or at the hardware store. Besides the strong water and ethanol signals, you can see in the insets a broadened doublet at 0.80, a singlet at 1.97 and weak multiplets at 1.37 and 3.27. Can anyone help me identify those? I referenced the ethanol triplet to 1.10. #NMRchat #foodScience

The tools we use are one of my favorite things about making #QMagnetics #benchtopNMR spectrometers. Yesterday we received new Borite lathe tools with TT-321 carbide inserts. The inserts are supposed to have a 1/64” tip radius. That’s important, so we checked them on an optical comparator. #NMR #scientificInstruments #chemistry #machinist

Here's a PTS-160 frequency synthesizer from my test equipment collection. PTS synths were supplied with #Varian #NMR spectrometers and are still commonly used in NMR labs. This one has seen heavy use in the Q Magnetics #QMagnetics R&D lab where we developed the world's highest field benchtop NMR spectrometer. The ancient HP-5328A counter on top has not been checked against a standard for >20 years. #NMRchat #benchtopNMR #electronics #chemistry

More old #electronics equipment from my Ebay-enabled home lab. #NixieTubes! This 1969 #Keithley 615 #electrometer has a discrete MOSFET front-end and a dual-slope A/D made of gate-level RTL chips. The rear-panel parallel output is labeled PRINTER, because that is all you were likely to do with it in 1969. I once used it to measure the beam current of a Philips #electronMicroscope. Here it is getting the right answer for a #Victoreen 1 GΩ resistor.

This Anubis gas balance, by the American Recording Chart Co., was used to measure the density of gas mixtures. In the chamber there is a beam balance with a glass bulb on one end. The buoyancy force on the bulb depends on the density of the gas filling the chamber, and the balance is calibrated so it directly reads density relative to air over the range 0.5 to 1.5. On the name plate, the Egyptian deity Anubis balances a feather against a human heart. #chemistry #physics #scientificInstruments

The #Tektronix 7000-series #oscilloscopes were highly versatile because of the many different vertical and horizontal plug-ins available. Some offered features that are hard to reproduce with any modern scope. The 7A22 was a high-gain (up to 10 μV/div) 1 MHz differential amplifier with adjustable high and low-pass filters. The 7A13 was a 100 MHz differential amplifier with an adjustable dc source that could be applied to either input. Both were introduce in 1969. #electronics

This is a Cahn model 21 electrobalance, with last digit of 0.1 μg on the most sensitive scale. I don't have the pans for it, but here it is weighing a bit of stainless wire that reads 94.4 mg on another balance, so it seems to be working. Have you ever used one of these? What did you use it for? This one is for magnetic susceptiblity measurements. #chemistry #NMR #NMRchat #scientificinstruments #physics

I’m the kind of #physics person who likes to build #ScientificInstruments, lately #benchtopNMR #spectrometers for #chemistry. I need lots of #tools to do my thing. This is my #Hardinge HLV-H #lathe, just after I finished a renovation in 2017. It was made in 1968 in Elmira, New York. In that era in the US, there were two competing high-precision “tool room” lathes, this one and the Monarch 10EE.

I’m the kind of #physics person who likes to make #scientificinstruments, recently #benchtopNMR spectrometers. I need a lot of tools for what I do, some electronic, some chemical, and some mechanical. Here’s my Starrett bench micrometer. Look closely and you can see it’s giving the right answer for a 40 mm gauge block. #chemistry #NMR
