  1. @IHender

"keep his trade agreements" - right.

He could drop every tariff to 0 right now, but the damage is done. He has proven to everyone what was already known by anyone who'd actually observed the man: he does not honour agreements, breaks them the moment he thinks it gives him an advantage, and acts impulsively without thinking.

The USA is now not a credibly stable trade partner. Who's to say it wouldn't turn on a dime tomorrow?

The world is going to keep re-organizing trade around ... everyone but the USA, for the foreseeable future. Once he's gone, and a handful of consecutive US administrations have acted like stable, reasonable adults, then the world might start reconsidering the USA as a worthwhile partner.

Trump's torched the USA's goodwill everywhere. There's no un-doing that with the stroke of a pen.

  2. @IHender #DougFord is a monumental a**hole. #EndOf. It’s really a shame 57% of eligible voters in Ontario decided not to vote. Who knows what kind of decent honest premier we might’ve had in power versus the one that leads the #MostCorruptGovernmentInTheHistoryOfCanada.

  3. @IHender This was a stupid vindictive move by #DougFord designed to make #OPSEU look bad. However they just succeeded in making themselves look bad.

cbc.ca/news/canada/edmonton/ju. Oh dear, the whinies out of Alberta are going to be loud, long, and bursting with self-pity. It will speak volumes if Smith lashes out at the judicial system in response. The rest of us should probably avoid overt displays of #Schadenfreude #CanPol #AlbertaSeparatism

Coverage of Ford wasting more than $28 million on a private jet doesn't seem to recall that he pulled a similar (altho less costly) stunt seven years ago, when he wanted a customized van that "would be kitted out with a dozen specialty items, including a mini-fridge, a 32-inch television with Blu-ray player, a leather power reclining sofa bench, four swivel chairs and desks, for a total price of $50,696 (HST included)."

    What a maroon.

I was just reading the Ontario news release:

    news.ontario.ca/en/release/100

Without taking issue with the whole document, the subhead did raise my eyebrows. It states "Proposed changes would...direct every dollar into classrooms." This is hyperbolic nonsense. It sounds good, but all kinds of education spending does not go to the classroom. What about the salaries of the supervisors who are helping Calandra cover up constant underfunding of the system, hmm?

To quote from an OSSTF facebook post I just saw:

"The government is choosing distraction over solutions.

Shifting to CEOs with no background in education is not reform. It is corporatization.

And it will not fix overcrowded classrooms, rising violence, or the lack of supports students need."

My first reaction: I worked at the Ministry of Education for almost thirty years, so know from experience that giving legislation titles like "Putting Student Achievement First Act" means the Bill is about none of those things. Its purpose is not to prioritize students or student achievement. Rather, it is trying to solve the problem of school boards pointing out that the provincial govt is undermining education by grossly underfunding it. 1/3

  14. I don't like kicking teams like the #TorontoMapleLeafs when they're down, but watching them trail St. Louis 2-0 in the second period, I can understand why the great sportswriter Jimmy Cannon said hockey would be a better game if it were played in the mud...

  15. We heard the #MetOpera Live in HD performance of #TristanundIsolde this afternoon and thought it was a superb production. Lise Davidsen and Michael Spyres were great leads with a strong supporting cast and wonderful orchestral playing. Yuval Sharon's direction was much criticized by some traditionalists, but offers dramatic range and intensity (clearly based on careful attention to music and text) and great visual effects. In all, a great afternoon of #Wagner.

  16. Discuss: According to latest results, Brad Bradford got about 8.4 times as many votes as Giorgio Mammoliti, but not as many as half the votes given to Chloe Brown.

  17. I'm very pleased by Olivia Chow's win. To get 37% of the vote in the circumstances is, I think, pretty impressive. Again, the first thing is to push back against any claim that the new Mayor has no "mandate". When Bailao was leading earlier with 36% of the vote, I was thinking that, if she won, none of the right wing would say she had no mandate. So they can't say that now just because they don't like the result - but they will.

  19. Challenged on his endorsement of Ana Bailão, John Tory responds "What, me worry?"

Meanwhile, Doug Ford goes 100% fear mongering in obliging Star puff piece that never points out he said just yetserday he is “staying out of the race”. Of course, blatant hypocrisy from right-wing politicians is hardly news, is it?

  20. Toronto Star editorial board surprises nobody. At least, they're honest enough to admit their choice is motivated by partisanship: "Chow, whose housing policy is disappointingly vague, has a long history as a New Democrat..."

I'd also point out that the board has put its cliché-o-matic into overdrive: "Toronto’s next mayor must be honest about the problems, lead with bold ideas, and forge consensus to achieve results."

  21. cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/lcb I hope that someone will clue in the #LCBO management that a return to work protocol is pretty universal when strikes are resolved. Or maybe some genius punk in the Ford government ordered them to do this to cause grief for #OPSEU - Ontario Cons are hopeless when it comes to #OnLab relations. I figure the LCBO leadership is probably happy to appear stupid and vindictive to please Ford.

  22. thestar.com/politics/provincia #OSSTF members of course have the right to decide if they want to accept this, but in my opinion they'd do well to reject it. I'd be very interested to hear the bargaining leadership's rationale for this. To start a mean and totally fictitious rumour, what if if turns out Ford offered them part of the #Greenbelt? #OnPoli #OnLabour

  23. Gotta love the bias from whoever scribbles Toronto Star headlines: "Billions at stake as Ontario takes public sector workers to Court of Appeal". How about "Constitutional rights at stake..."? or "Court of Appeal to rule if Ontario taxpayers' reps guilty of wage theft"?

Very good piece on the #Hunka affair by Nora Loreto. #CanPoli

Also, a plug. Nora Loreto does great journalism, but her perspectives are not something our mainstream media likes to feature. Her book, "Spin Doctors
How Media and Politicians Misdiagnosed the COVID-19 Pandemic" is one of the best and most insghtful pieces I've read about our COVID experience. She could use support: so I encourage you to vist her substack page and subscribe!

The unspeakable endorses the implausible. No doubt, the right in Toronto has suffered since John Tory ceased to be there to provide a veneer of plausible (albeit philandering) gentility.
