  1. The directory now includes 450 short stories, essays, and introductions. The latest entry is Ellison's introduction to Keith Laumer's short story collection Nine by Laumer. Laumer was one of the authors collected in the legendary Dangerous Visions anthology. ndhfilms.com/other/ellison/ind

  2. Two more short stories added to the directory:

First is Cosmic Striptease, which appeared in the January, 1958 issue of Fantastic. In this story, aliens from Mars broadcast a documentary about their society to the entire world. Of course, the TV networks jump at the chance to sell commercial spots, which backfires spectacularly. ndhfilms.com/other/ellison/ind

  3. The City on the Edge of Forever is the fiftieth book in the directory. ndhfilms.com/other/ellison/ind

First published in 1996, this book covers the history of Ellison's script for Star Trek: TOS, The City on the Edge of Forever. "City" has been acclaimed as the best episode of the original Star Trek. Unfortunately, the episode's troubled production sparked a bitter feud between Ellison and Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry. Ellison himself claims to have only watched "City" once.

  4. My copy of The Last Dangerous Visions by arrived today. I know what I'm reading tonight!

  5. ndhfilms.com/other/ellison/ind Dangerous Visions is the forty-ninth book in the directory.

First published in 1967, Dangerous Visions is one of the most influential anthologies ever published. Edited by Ellison, the book collects thirty-three original sf short stories that would have been too taboo to publish in the major science-fiction publications of the time.

Most sf today owes some debt to the barriers broken by Dangerous Visions.

  6. youtube.com/watch?v=WT8oDKqoh_g shares some of the quotes that inspired him. I like 'sat ci sat bene', 'It is done quickly enough if it is done well.'

  7. New blog post: some terrific discovered in a essay, plus an update on the forthcoming summer issue of Quarter Up. nantucketebooks.com/blog/2024/

  8. Better a half-century late than never! The Last Dangerous Visions, 's sf anthology, will be published in October. Publisher's Weekly has given the book a rare starred review, signifying literary merit. publishersweekly.com/979821218

  9. In honor of the 55th anniversary of Apollo 11, here's a cut from the directory. Only Harlan Ellison would write a negative review of...the moon landing.

  10. The Book of Ellison is the forty-eighth book in the directory. This book collects nine essays by Ellison, plus two short stories from his pre-professional (i.e. amateur) career. 11. The Other Glass Teat is the forty-seventh book in the directory. ndhfilms.com/other/ellison/ind

This book contains fifty essays of TV and cultural criticism from Ellison's newspaper column The Glass Teat. These essays, written between 1970 and 1972, cover topics like the Kent State shooting, voyeurism in commercials, the perils of excessive nostalgia, the Nixon administration's war on the press, child beauty pageants, and sex on waterbeds.

  12. No further updates to the directory for a bit. Next book is a big one which will take a while to read and summarize.

  13. Phoenix Without Ashes (awesome title) is the forty-sixth book in the directory.

    ndhfilms.com/other/ellison/ind

This novel by Edward Bryant is adapted from Ellison's original script for the ill-fated TV series The Starlost. While considered an abysmal show, the story's pretty neat, and I could see it playing well on TV today.

The book includes an introduction by Ellison explaining the disastrous pre-production of the show, which led him to quit and remove his name from the credits.

  14. Gentleman Junkie is the forty-fifth book in the directory.

    ndhfilms.com/ellison#gentleman

This 1961 short story collection is one of Ellison's best. There is no sf in this collection, it's all crime and suspense (plus one quality erotic fiction work).

Many highlights: Final Shtick, Free With This Box, Daniel White for the Greater Good, This is Jackie Spinning, High Dice, Enter the Fanatic Stage Center, No 4th Commandment, and The Night of Delicate Terrors.

  15. The Time of the Eye is the forty-fourth book in the directory. This 1974 short story collection was published for the British market. As a follow-up to All the Sounds of Fear, it collects the remaining stories from the US book Alone Against Tomorrow.

I recall Neil Gaiman writing that this book was one of his early introductions to Ellison.

  16. A perfectly normal title:

How You Stupidly Blew $15 Million a Week, Avoided Having an Adenoid-Shaped Swimming Pool in Your Back Yard, Missed the Opportunity to Have a Mutually Destructive Love Affair with Clint Eastwood and/or Raquel Welch, and Otherwise Pissed Me Off

  17. High and Merlot, by Akira Kurosawa.

  18. Here are some that have tormented me:
