  1. @zeroiee For me it's definitively the digital discovery for debugging of SPI, I2C and parallel buses, and the picoscope. Very useful and both come with a Linux software.

  2. Probably one of the most important tools at our company: The CAN/LIN debug adapter.

It lets us connect our PCs to a CAN or LIN bus network and send or receive data frames via an sophisticated software. The software enables us to filter frames, check timing parameters and data as well as write frames to simulate missing parts of any existing physical bus (Residual bus simulation)

Not cheap, but worth every penny. Which tools can you no longer do without at your workplace?

  4. Hey show technicians and DMX fans, we have something for you!

In our #showcar projects and demonstrators, we often need to control various types of lighting. Setting moods or attracting the attention of passers-by are just two examples of use-cases. The industry standard for this application is the DMX protocol, and there is a vast ecosystem of controllers, software applications, and lights that follow this standard. Our super-flexible LightNode does not natively "speak" DMX, but we have developed a DMX to CAN translator. The video briefly demonstrates how the moving faders of "Q Light Controller" control the color transitions of a light strip connected to our #AMPS LightNode. Of course, this can also be automated! 6. We have added a language switch to our homepage zero-iee.com .

The Hugo static site generator is making this a breeze! 👍

Not only is it relatively simple to add new functionality, but also we don't need to worry about web service security. Hosting is done by our supplier and there is no CMS that needs updates or has security flaws introduced by badly maintained plugins 💪

Static site generators are not for every use case - but they are just perfect for small sites that are updated infrequently. Most Wordpress-based small business websites could also be a static website generated by a tool like Hugo.

  7. We visited Würth's new Hightech Innovation Center in Munich yesterday!

They showcased their new EMC compatibility and electronics endurance testing equipment and led us through their laboratories. It was impressive to see their modern equipment in action. They are able to make precise measurements of electronic devices and their electromagnetic emissions as well as their resistance to environmental EM.

  17. We took our #AMPS MotorControl Nodes to the limit!

One of our customers attached 11 MotorNodes to a DisplayNode and used this setup to endurance-test 22 vehicle mirror actuators. The setup has worked fine for at least 3 months and 30.000 mirror fold/unfold cycles.

This custom-make variant of the DisplayNode lets the customer configure the endurance tester and set test parameters such as motor blocking current, moving speed, number of test cycles and more. The user can connect to a web-based, mobile device friendly user interface to configure the #AMPS stack via their mobile phone or tablet. No local network needed - it's all available via the integrated Wifi hotspot.

  24. Smart City Boxes in the wild!

In beautiful and sunny weather, we set up the first four SmartCity Boxes on the Digitales Testfeld "ErsteMeile" (test field "FirstMile") in Ingolstadt, 🇩🇪 .

We developed the boxes as part of the #5GoIng project and improved them in several iterations. They are completely energy self-sufficient and designed to visually warn vulnerable road users using a special feature of the 5G technology.

For this to work reliably, tests are still required and planned with the rest of the infrastructure of the test field.

  25. As you might know, our website zero-iee.com is a static web site generated by Hugo.

We want to use symbols such as a check mark on our pages in the future. The easiest way to do this is to use the appropriate UTF-8 character code in our texts.

Unfortunately, however, web browsers display the symbols differently - the Edge browser on Windows, for example, displays them in purple (dark mode) and Firefox onUbuntu in gray. This does not always match our color scheme.

That's why we came up with a workaround for Hugo that simply replaces all UTF-8 checkmarks with an SVG graphic and replaces them in the text of the page ($content).

  26. With #LTE and #5g mobile connections, the demands on the voltage sources have also increased: In particular high peak currents of approx. 4 A @ 3.7 V and more can push some circuits and the voltage converters installed in them to their limits.

In the event of stability problems with mobile radio modems, it is therefore particularly worth taking a brief look away from the software and towards the hardware. Can the power supply really meet the high requirements? An examination with an oscilloscope shows even the smallest fluctuations in the millisecond range and can reveal possible problems.

In our specific case, we are investigating stability problems with a new modem, which can only be reproduced unreliably. In the video you can see that even small pings have a visible effect (voltage fluctuations of approx. 800 mV) on the voltage source.

  27. Having power issues sometimes is the "It's always DNS" equivalent in the embedded electronics world.

When we wanted to put one of our customer projects into operation, we noticed strange problems with a Quectel modem that we had not had before. Of course, from a software developer's point of view, the software was initially suspected of causing problems. But slowly a different picture emerged ...

Read the full story and learn how important it is to always consider hardware when you're having software problems (and vice versa!):

  28. C-V2X communication requires _very_ precise timing so that transmitting devices can find and use their transmission time slot. We rely on GPS time for this.

For our V2X node (zero-iee.com/assets/products/p), we are therefore trying out various GPS modules that provide us with the necessary 1PPS signal. This is not the case for all modules.

We are curious to see whether the AT6558R GPS chip proves itself and meets our requirements.

  29. There's room in the smallest hut!

The Leibniz-Institut für Agrartechnik und Bioökonomie e.V. (ATB) tasked us to build a small, battery-powered water- and dustproof computer system with 5G connectivity. Given our ample expertise, we gladly accepted the challenge. The biggest difficulty turned out to be the size constraints: maximum outline dimensions of 10x10x10cm.

But Felix Hermes did a great job, created a 3D-printed baseplate and went through several iterations to accommodate all pieces incl. 4 small antennas. The resulting end product is a marvel of space efficiency and we are grateful to being given the opportunity to develop it!

  30. We're evaluating @plausible for collecting basic visitor statistics about our blog and homepage.

Google Analytics and similar competitors require us to review our privacy policy and take other actions to comply with the GDPR.

Self-hosted Matomo is great, but way too powerful. We just need basic statistics (how many visitors per day / which pages are frequently accessed?).

Plausible Analytics seems to be perfect for the job, because

    * it provides exactly the metrics we want
    * it's easy to set up
    * no worrying about the GDPR
    * it's open source software
    * it can be self-hosted or booked as a service (plausible.io)

    Well done, @markosaric ! 👏
