From Gimmick to Trend: Marvin’s Tire Watch
If you spend much time looking at watches from the 1950s (or thrift stores) you’ve probably seen one: A keychain with a fob that looks like a tire but contains a mechanical watch. Although the era of the tire watch has long gone, it proved to be an important milestone in Swiss watchmaking, showing that there was a market for a “second watch”, as marketing whiz Georges Caspari called it. And the whimsical shape attracted new and younger customers, a market Caspari addressed for Breitling just a few years later.

Marvin introduced the Montres Pneu and Clip together in July, 1937The Montre Pneu (“Tire Watch” in French) was nothing but a gimmick when it was introduced in 1937, and the company certainly expected the success it saw two decades later. It was introduced alongside a watch with a spring-loaded attachment known simply as the “Montre Clip”, with simple and descriptive named. Indeed, Marvin appears not to have attempted to trademark the “Pneu” name, unsurprising since it is simply the French word for tire.
The basic design of the Montre Pneu is simple: A compact (10.5 ligne) movement is placed in a hinged case that resembles an automobile tire. It was designed to be placed on a desk, with the movement raised at an angle for easy viewing. Marvin registered the design for protection with the Swiss patent agency but did not (yet) file for a patent since it was so simple and derivative of other desk watches.
But the Montre Pneu did have one striking element: The movement was visible on the reverse side through a transparent glass case back. This allowed Marvin to show off their finishing skills, and recalled the open pocket watches prized by previous generations.
Although the original Montre Pneu was a striking desk accessory, Marvin stopped promoting it almost immediately. It was simply left in the company’s inventory as Switzerland and the world turned their attention to the looming World War.

The 1950s saw striking new designsAfter World War II, the Swiss watch industry was the envy of the world. Thanks to low exchange rates and limited damage and dislocation, the Swiss were able to ramp production of watches to levels never before seen. Swiss watch factories were able to capitalize on the world’s hunger for affordable, mass-produced luxuries like watches.
Marvin was a progressive firm, aggressively pushing new styling and design. Their early post-war offerings presage the trends that would shape this “golden era” of watches, with slim cases, angled dials, and modern features like center seconds. They even produced a “mystery watch” with an open outer case two years before the famous Ernest Borel Cocktail watch.
But Marvin dealers kept ordering the humble little tire watch! A steady stream of customers gravitated to it as a gift for “the man who has everything”, some of whom had looped a keyring through the cutout and carried it around as a fob. Women loved it, too, carrying the little watch in their purse when they didn’t want to wear a wristwatch.
Georges Caspari was the greatest marketer in the golden age of watchmaking, from Omega to Breitling to the humble Marvin Pneu!Advertising consultant Georges Caspari, hired by Marvin to help differentiate the brand, was struck by the possibility that a new and untapped market was opened by the Montre Pneu. He realized that customers would quickly buy a novelty as a second watch for themselves and would not hesitate giving one as a gift.
He pressed the company to offer an official keychain and kickstand to make it more versatile, as well as a smaller model for ladies with brightly-colored tires.
In 1953, Caspari kicked off one of the greatest marketing campaigns in watchmaking history, positioning the tire watch alongside famous automobile brands (Jaguar, Mercedes, and Fiat) and racing drivers (Fangio, Ascari, and Moss) with barely a mention of the Marvin Watch Company or any technical specifications.
Marvin produced a solid gold Pneu, and a calendar modelDemand exploded, with the Pneu quickly becoming the best-selling watch in the world. Marvin leaned into the trend, producing a version with a full calendar and even a solid gold chronometer as expensive as a Patek Philippe. It was 1954 before technical director Albert Boillod submitted a patent application on the Pneu design.
The Meaning of the Fad
Marvin rode the tire watch fad for a few more years, selling millions of examples around the world. Despite the patent (granted in 1957), knock-offs quickly appeared on the market. Many of these came from so-called “economic watch” producers outside the Swiss Jura: Busga, Candino, and Hanowa in German-speaking Switzerland, Mortima in France, and even the American Timex and Bulova. Unlike Marvin, many of these used cheap cylinder or Roskopf movements and were sold at half the price.
Marvin introduced a range of novelties but none were as successful as the little tire watchMarvin tried to diversify in 1958, introducing a watch shaped like a steering wheel and a nautical model in a life ring. But these lacked the charm and functionality of the little rubber tire model, which had finally saturated the market.
Georges Caspari understood that the real lesson of the Marvin Montre Pneu was the potential demand for specialized and differentiated watches. In the late 1950s he helped Willy Breitling to position the chronograph as a symbol of a sporting and dynamic personality. Thanks to Caspari, Breitling focused on the Navitimer, Chronomat, and Unitime and his iconic yellow-backed advertisements remain evident even today. He also pressed Swiss watch manufacturers to embrace the so-called teenage market with new and dynamic watches and chronographs.

Georges Caspari was one of the sharpest advertising and marketing minds in history, and his “second watch” concept was embraced by Ernest Thomke on March 1, 1983, when he introduced the Swatch: Although the name was officially a contraction of “Swiss Watch”, Thomke specifically mentioned that it was intended to be a “second watch” according to Caspari’s market positioning. It’s easy to see that the Swatch buyers see these fantastic, stylish plastic watches as a second or third or more! What had once been an industry focused on selling a single watch per buyer has evolved into one where collectors purchase boxes of watches and ordinary buyers purchase a new watch every year or more.

But now I see the goal is to not employ anyone either. A lot of the benefits for corporations are justified on the idea that they employ people, so helping them helps people. La soberanía, entendida en su dimensión más estricta y no como un recurso retórico adaptable, constituye uno de los pilares fundamentales sobre los cuales se edifica el orden constitucional mexicano, por ello, de los numerales 39 al 41 de la Constitución Política de los Estados Unidos Mexicanos no solo establecen que la soberanía nacional reside esencial y originariamente en el pueblo, sino que además delimitan el origen, la legitimidad y el propósito del poder público, lo cual implica que cualquier forma de influencia externa que pretenda incidir en las decisiones internas del país debe ser observada bajo un criterio de excepcionalidad y cautela; es decir, no basta con invocar la soberanía como un principio abstracto cuando conviene al discurso político, sino que se exige coherencia en su aplicación práctica, ya que en la medida en que se relativiza o se interpreta de manera flexible, se corre el riesgo de vaciarla de contenido, convirtiéndola en un concepto maleable que pierde su capacidad de operar como límite frente a actores externos y como garantía frente a los propios excesos del poder interno, por lo tanto, hablar de intervencionismo extranjero no puede reducirse a una etiqueta circunstancial, sino que debe entenderse como una categoría que implica la transgresión de un principio constitucional claramente definido.
Desde esta perspectiva, y bajo una visión estrictamente personal, el momento político actual en México presenta la confluencia de, al menos, tres acontecimientos que han sido utilizados para “apelar” —ya sea de manera directa o indirecta— a la noción de intervencionismo extranjero dentro del discurso público, comenzando por el tratamiento institucional dirigido hacia Maru Campos, continuando con el contexto que rodea a Rubén Rocha Moya y culminando con la presencia en territorio nacional de Isabel Díaz Ayuso; empero, en medio de esta construcción narrativa que parece defender con firmeza la soberanía frente a cualquier forma de injerencia externa, se omite un elemento que, lejos de ser anecdótico, adquiere relevancia política en un entorno internacional particularmente sensible, y es la participación de Claudia Sheinbaum en un encuentro de liderazgos de izquierda latinoamericana en Barcelona, lo cual introduce una variable que no puede analizarse de manera aislada cuando las relaciones entre México y ciertos sectores de poder en Estados Unidos se encuentran en un punto de tensión que, aunque no siempre explícito, resulta innegable en su trasfondo.
El caso de Maru Campos permite observar con claridad cómo la lógica de la soberanía no se limita a la defensa frente a actores externos, sino que también se proyecta hacia el interior del sistema político como un mecanismo de control y de narrativa institucional, por ello, el citatorio emitido desde el Senado, cuidadosamente presentado bajo la figura de una “invitación” a comparecer, no puede interpretarse únicamente como un ejercicio ordinario de rendición de cuentas, sino que debe analizarse en el contexto político en el que se produce, particularmente cuando el trasfondo del caso se encuentra relacionado con versiones que comenzaron a surgir posteriormente sobre la participación directa de agencias norteamericanas en acciones para desmantelar un narcolaboratorio dentro del estado de Chihuahua, inicialmente presentado bajo una narrativa públicamente contradictoria respecto a las circunstancias en las que fallecieron dos agentes estadounidenses; ya que mientras las versiones oficiales intentaron reducir el hecho a un accidente aislado, distintas filtraciones y reportes posteriores apuntaron a la existencia de coordinación previa entre autoridades mexicanas y personal extranjero, lo que introduce una contradicción adicional, porque el ingreso y actuación formal de agentes internacionales dentro del territorio nacional únicamente puede producirse mediante autorización federal, lo cual revela una utilización estratégica de los instrumentos institucionales para generar presión pública bajo un lenguaje que pretende mantener una apariencia de neutralidad, derivado de esto, se configura una primera señal de selectividad, porque mientras se activa el aparato institucional frente a ciertos actores, se construye paralelamente una narrativa que legitima dicha acción como parte del funcionamiento democrático, cuando en realidad responde a una lógica de oportunidad política, lo cual implica que la soberanía, en lugar de operar como un principio uniforme, comienza a fragmentarse en su aplicación.
Al trasladar el análisis al caso de Rubén Rocha Moya, el escenario adquiere una complejidad mayor, ya que en él convergen factores internos y externos que no pueden entenderse de manera aislada, por lo tanto, la existencia de un marco jurídico y operativo norteamericano orientado a combatir estructuras criminales bajo esquemas de seguridad ampliada introduce una dimensión que rebasa el ámbito nacional y que abre la puerta a presiones diplomáticas, cooperación reforzada e incluso a interpretaciones con capacidad de impactar a distintos actores políticos, particularmente después de la publicación de la nueva estrategia estadounidense contra el tráfico de drogas, un documento de más de 190 páginas orientado a homologar y coordinar el actuar de distintas agencias de seguridad bajo una lógica de combate transnacional al narcotráfico; empero, lo verdaderamente relevante no radica únicamente en la existencia de este instrumento, sino en el momento en que adquiere protagonismo dentro del discurso y la acción política, particularmente porque las versiones y documentos difundidos alrededor del caso no se limitan exclusivamente a la figura del gobernador sinaloense, sino que incluyen solicitudes norteamericanas de detención y posterior extradición dirigidas contra un grupo más amplio de actores políticos del estado de Sinaloa, alcanzando presuntamente a diez funcionarios tanto del ámbito ejecutivo como legislativo vinculados con estructuras criminales, lo que transforma el asunto de un señalamiento individual a una posible red de protección política, derivado de esto, la licencia solicitada por Rocha Moya bajo el argumento de facilitar las investigaciones terminó generando todavía más cuestionamientos ante la ausencia de información clara sobre su ubicación y sobre el verdadero alcance de la cooperación entre autoridades mexicanas y norteamericanas, ya que es precisamente en este tipo de escenarios donde se vuelve pertinente preguntarse bajo qué condiciones determinadas herramientas internacionales se activan con mayor intensidad, lo cual permite sostener, desde una lectura personal, que ciertos acontecimientos políticos pueden funcionar como detonadores contextuales que facilitan la utilización de mecanismos previamente establecidos, no como resultado de una relación causal automática, sino como consecuencia de un entorno geopolítico que vuelve más viable su aplicación, por ello, no se trata de afirmar que un hecho específico genere una reacción inmediata, sino de reconocer que en el ámbito internacional los movimientos políticos se interpretan, se acumulan y, eventualmente, se utilizan.

La tensión alrededor de este episodio adquirió una dimensión todavía más reveladora tras el retiro de la invitación que originalmente había sido extendida a Ayuso para participar en un evento organizado por Grupo Xcaret en Quintana Roo, ya que la explicación pública ofrecida por la propia empresa terminó exhibiendo una contradicción difícil de ignorar, particularmente cuando se argumentó que la decisión obedecía a declaraciones realizadas por la dirigente española “meses anteriores”, pese a que una visita internacional de esta naturaleza necesariamente implicó un proceso de coordinación y planeación previo durante el cual dichas posturas ya eran ampliamente conocidas por quienes organizaron y avalaron su presencia en México, lo cual vuelve poco congruente sostener que el verdadero detonante surgió repentinamente de expresiones que ya formaban parte de su perfil político público; por ello, desde una visión estrictamente personal, resulta complicado desvincular la cancelación del contexto político y mediático que se intensificó tras las declaraciones emitidas ya en territorio mexicano, especialmente cuando distintos sectores afines al oficialismo reaccionaron de manera inmediata y cuando el costo político de mantener su participación comenzó a crecer públicamente, derivado de esto, el episodio termina proyectando la percepción de que ciertas expresiones políticas extranjeras pueden ser toleradas o desplazadas del espacio público dependiendo de la narrativa dominante del momento, lo que vuelve todavía más difusa la línea entre la defensa legítima de la soberanía y la administración selectiva de las voces consideradas políticamente aceptables.
A partir de estos tres casos, el análisis permite identificar un patrón que trasciende los hechos aislados, dicho esto, la soberanía no opera en la práctica como un principio rígido, sino como una herramienta que se adapta a las necesidades del momento político; sin embargo, adquiere una dimensión aún más relevante cuando la narrativa oficial comienza a mostrar una fisura, porque mientras se invoca la soberanía como principio inquebrantable frente a cualquier forma de intervención externa, se omite señalar con la misma claridad que la participación de la propia presidenta en espacios como la IV Reunión “En Defensa de la Democracia”, realizada en Barcelona el pasado mes de abril, no es un acto neutro, no es un gesto diplomático aislado, es una toma de postura, y en un contexto de tensiones con actores internacionales relevantes, esa postura no solo se observa, se interpreta y eventualmente se utiliza, particularmente cuando se incorpora el contexto internacional en el que se inscriben estos acontecimientos, ya que la participación en foros de carácter ideológico fuera del país no puede desvincularse de la manera en que dichos movimientos son leídos por otros actores globales, especialmente en un entorno donde las relaciones bilaterales se encuentran sujetas a tensiones constantes, por ello, las decisiones políticas no se producen en el vacío, sino dentro de marcos de interpretación que influyen en la activación de determinadas herramientas jurídicas o diplomáticas.
Este entramado se vuelve aún más evidente cuando se traslada al terreno electoral, donde los incentivos políticos adquieren una relevancia determinante, por lo tanto, el contexto rumbo a 2027 introduce una variable que no puede ignorarse, ya que los movimientos observados en el presente parecen responder a una lógica de posicionamiento anticipado que desborda los tiempos formales establecidos por la ley, lo cual se refleja en la proliferación de figuras como “Coordinadores de la Defensa de la Transformación” para el caso del oficialismo y, en el caso de partidos como PAN y PRI, bajo la denominación “Coordinadores de la defensa del voto”, cuya función resulta difícil de desvincular de una estrategia de construcción de presencia territorial con fines electorales, derivado de esto, la discusión deja de ser estrictamente jurídica para convertirse en un análisis de coherencia política.
No hace falta probar jurídicamente que son actos anticipados; basta exhibir la lógica: cambiar el nombre para evitar la consecuencia. Y cuando esa lógica se normaliza, el problema deja de ser una posible infracción aislada para convertirse en una práctica sistemática que erosiona la equidad del proceso democrático, dicho lo anterior, no puede atribuirse exclusivamente a un solo actor político, ya que, distintos partidos han incurrido en estrategias similares, evidenciando que la simulación no es una anomalía, sino una constante dentro del sistema, por ello, el lenguaje deja de ser un instrumento de claridad para convertirse en una herramienta de evasión que permite sortear las restricciones legales sin modificar la esencia de la conducta.
En este contexto, la relación entre soberanía, selectividad política y simulación electoral adquiere una coherencia que no puede ignorarse, por lo tanto, los distintos casos analizados no deben entenderse como episodios aislados, sino como manifestaciones de una misma lógica en la que los principios se adaptan a las necesidades del momento, lo que revela una transformación profunda en la manera en que se ejerce el poder, ya que, en lugar de operar bajo criterios absolutos, se ajusta a una racionalidad estratégica que privilegia la utilidad política por encima de la consistencia normativa, derivado de esto, la soberanía pierde su carácter de límite y se convierte en un recurso que se activa o se desactiva según convenga.
Lo que comenzó como una discusión sobre intervencionismo extranjero termina revelando algo más profundo, por ello, el problema ya no radica en quién interviene o deja de intervenir, sino en quién decide cuándo nombrarlo y cuándo ignorarlo; los principios ya no son absolutos; empero, son administrados.
Finalmente, esta realidad obliga a replantear no solo la manera en que se interpreta la soberanía, sino también el uso que se hace de ella dentro del discurso político contemporáneo, porque en la medida en que se convierte en un recurso flexible, pierde su capacidad de funcionar como un principio rector y se transforma en una herramienta de legitimación, lo cual plantea una interrogante inevitable ¿la soberanía sigue siendo un principio o se ha convertido en un recurso discursivo estratégicamente permisivo, activado o ignorado según la conveniencia política, incluso cuando el tablero electoral ya comenzó a moverse mucho antes de que la ley lo permita?

Un día como hoy en 1521 fallecía en Texcoco (posiblemente), México, el tlatoani, guerrero y militar Tlaxcalteca, Xicohténcatl Axayacatzin, quien luchó contra las fuerzas españolas durante el periodo de la Conquista y tras haber sido vencido generó alianzas para continuar su lucha; sin embargo, Hernán Cortés tuvo conocimiento previo de sus intenciones de provocar un golpe de estado en Tlaxcala y ordenó su captura y muerte; en 1820 nacía en Florencia, Italia, la enfermera, escritora, estadista y profesora Florence Nightingale, quien a temprana edad mostró su pasión por ayudar en la atención a los enfermos y modificar un poco el trato que se les brindaba; fue altamente reconocida por su labor en la Guerra de Crimea en el hospital de Scutari; sin embargo, la prensa de la época pareciera haber exaltado de más dicho trabajo con lo que le valió convertirla en una imagen pública en el Reino Unido. La soberanía, entendida en su dimensión más estricta y no como un recurso retórico adaptable, constituye uno de los pilares fundamentales sobre los cuales se edifica el orden constitucional mexicano, por ello, de los numerales 39 al 41 de la Constitución Política de los Estados Unidos Mexicanos no solo establecen que la soberanía nacional reside esencial y originariamente en el pueblo, sino que además delimitan el origen, la legitimidad y el propósito del poder público, lo cual implica que cualquier forma de influencia externa que pretenda incidir en las decisiones internas del país debe ser observada bajo un criterio de excepcionalidad y cautela; es decir, no basta con invocar la soberanía como un principio abstracto cuando conviene al discurso político, sino que se exige coherencia en su aplicación práctica, ya que en la medida en que se relativiza o se interpreta de manera flexible, se corre el riesgo de vaciarla de contenido, convirtiéndola en un concepto maleable que pierde su capacidad de operar como límite frente a actores externos y como garantía frente a los propios excesos del poder interno, por lo tanto, hablar de intervencionismo extranjero no puede reducirse a una etiqueta circunstancial, sino que debe entenderse como una categoría que implica la transgresión de un principio constitucional claramente definido.
Desde esta perspectiva, y bajo una visión estrictamente personal, el momento político actual en México presenta la confluencia de, al menos, tres acontecimientos que han sido utilizados para “apelar” —ya sea de manera directa o indirecta— a la noción de intervencionismo extranjero dentro del discurso público, comenzando por el tratamiento institucional dirigido hacia Maru Campos, continuando con el contexto que rodea a Rubén Rocha Moya y culminando con la presencia en territorio nacional de Isabel Díaz Ayuso; empero, en medio de esta construcción narrativa que parece defender con firmeza la soberanía frente a cualquier forma de injerencia externa, se omite un elemento que, lejos de ser anecdótico, adquiere relevancia política en un entorno internacional particularmente sensible, y es la participación de Claudia Sheinbaum en un encuentro de liderazgos de izquierda latinoamericana en Barcelona, lo cual introduce una variable que no puede analizarse de manera aislada cuando las relaciones entre México y ciertos sectores de poder en Estados Unidos se encuentran en un punto de tensión que, aunque no siempre explícito, resulta innegable en su trasfondo.
El caso de Maru Campos permite observar con claridad cómo la lógica de la soberanía no se limita a la defensa frente a actores externos, sino que también se proyecta hacia el interior del sistema político como un mecanismo de control y de narrativa institucional, por ello, el citatorio emitido desde el Senado, cuidadosamente presentado bajo la figura de una “invitación” a comparecer, no puede interpretarse únicamente como un ejercicio ordinario de rendición de cuentas, sino que debe analizarse en el contexto político en el que se produce, particularmente cuando el trasfondo del caso se encuentra relacionado con versiones que comenzaron a surgir posteriormente sobre la participación directa de agencias norteamericanas en acciones para desmantelar un narcolaboratorio dentro del estado de Chihuahua, inicialmente presentado bajo una narrativa públicamente contradictoria respecto a las circunstancias en las que fallecieron dos agentes estadounidenses; ya que mientras las versiones oficiales intentaron reducir el hecho a un accidente aislado, distintas filtraciones y reportes posteriores apuntaron a la existencia de coordinación previa entre autoridades mexicanas y personal extranjero, lo que introduce una contradicción adicional, porque el ingreso y actuación formal de agentes internacionales dentro del territorio nacional únicamente puede producirse mediante autorización federal, lo cual revela una utilización estratégica de los instrumentos institucionales para generar presión pública bajo un lenguaje que pretende mantener una apariencia de neutralidad, derivado de esto, se configura una primera señal de selectividad, porque mientras se activa el aparato institucional frente a ciertos actores, se construye paralelamente una narrativa que legitima dicha acción como parte del funcionamiento democrático, cuando en realidad responde a una lógica de oportunidad política, lo cual implica que la soberanía, en lugar de operar como un principio uniforme, comienza a fragmentarse en su aplicación.

Finalmente, esta realidad obliga a replantear no solo la manera en que se interpreta la soberanía, sino también el uso que se hace de ella dentro del discurso político contemporáneo, porque en la medida en que se convierte en un recurso flexible, pierde su capacidad de funcionar como un principio rector y se transforma en una herramienta de legitimación, lo cual plantea una interrogante inevitable ¿la soberanía sigue siendo un principio o se ha convertido en un recurso discursivo estratégicamente permisivo, activado o ignorado según la conveniencia política, incluso cuando el tablero electoral ya comenzó a moverse mucho antes de que la ley lo permita?
DATO CULTURAL.
Un día como hoy en 1521 fallecía en Texcoco (posiblemente), México, el tlatoani, guerrero y militar Tlaxcalteca, Xicohténcatl Axayacatzin, quien luchó contra las fuerzas españolas durante el periodo de la Conquista y tras haber sido vencido generó alianzas para continuar su lucha; sin embargo, Hernán Cortés tuvo conocimiento previo de sus intenciones de provocar un golpe de estado en Tlaxcala y ordenó su captura y muerte; en 1820 nacía en Florencia, Italia, la enfermera, escritora, estadista y profesora Florence Nightingale, quien a temprana edad mostró su pasión por ayudar en la atención a los enfermos y modificar un poco el trato que se les brindaba; fue altamente reconocida por su labor en la Guerra de Crimea en el hospital de Scutari; sin embargo, la prensa de la época pareciera haber exaltado de más dicho trabajo con lo que le valió convertirla en una imagen pública en el Reino Unido. El reconocimiento del día internacional de la enfermera se estableció debido a la fecha de nacimiento de esta notable mujer; en 1910 nacía en El Cairo, Imperio Británico, la bioquímica Dorothy Mary Crowfoot Hodgkin, quien descubrió la técnica para visualizar las estructuras moleculares en tres dimensiones en forma de cristales a la que se llamó “Cristalografía”, con la cual, se consiguieron avances importantes en las investigaciones sobre la estructura de la vitamina B12 y la penicilina lo que le valió ganar el Premio Nobel de Química en 1964 “por sus determinaciones mediante técnicas de rayos X de las estructuras de importantes sustancias bioquímicas».
