Becoming unreadableArt Meets Radical Openness
Festival dedicated to Art, Hacktivism and Open CultureArt Meets Radical Openness is a biennial community festival for art, hacktivism and open cultures. It provides a space for discussion and resistance against technological monoculture, and for sharing and learning together on contemporary issues of our networked times.
The current techno-political moment is dominated by AI and by the strengthening of the alliance between big tech and conservative politics, as well as a blind faith in endless computational growth. All of this relies on forms of “hyper-visibility”, based on the assumption that a constant online omnipresence is normal and desirable. Our interconnectedness forms the basis of mainstream digital cultures and serves as a tool for ubiquitous surveillance and the exploitative appropriation of works and data by big tech, which demands critical opposition.
For its 2026 edition, titled ‘Becoming Unreadable’, AMRO invites its community to reflect on and engage with invisibility, unreadability, ungovernability, and uncomputability as strategies for resistance.. AMRO26 aims at challenging the common understanding of AI, networks and computers, and through its programme, explores approaches that offer real change: low-tech, feminist and community IT, computing within limits, up to even more radical ideas around de-computing, de-networking, de-scaling and de-platforming ourselves. 'Becoming Unreadable' involves evading surveillance by oligarchic tech corporations, operate under the radar, and refuse to comply to the total AI cloud. Non-commercial community infrastructures are fundamental tools in this process, but even more importantly we need to develop new ways of understanding each others and being together as humans. Art Meets Radical Openness wants to be a space dedicated to that.

They are catalysts that spark new discourses and open up new directions of thinking. Free Open Source Software, open tools in general and the use of free licenses are the precondition and basis for the digital practice of a community like this, which impels social transformation. De gouden helm van Coțofenești
De gouden helm van CoțofeneștiEigenlijk wilde ik al een hele tijd een blogje schrijven over de gouden helm van Coțofenești, die onlangs is gestolen van de Dacië-expositie in het Drents Museum in Assen, samen met enkele armbanden waarover ik al eens blogde. Het kwam echter almaar niet van dat blogje. Maar overmorgen is hier een gastblogger die naar de diefstal zal verwijzen, dus nu kan ik het niet langer uitstellen. Zomaar wat vragen die bij mij opkwam.
Eerste vragen
Om te beginnen: waar komt het ding nou vandaan, hoe oud is het en is het wel afkomstig uit Dacië? De laatste weken lezen we dat de helm komt uit Coțofenești, maar toen die in 2019/2020 stond opgesteld in de Dacië-expositie in Tongeren, was hij nog afkomstig uit Vărbilău. En terwijl we nu lezen dat het voorwerp stamt uit het midden van de vijfde eeuw v.Chr., dateerde het in Tongeren nog uit 425 tot 375 v.Chr.
De vraag naar de herkomst is simpel te beantwoorden. Coțofenești maakt deel uit van de gemeente Vărbilău, zo’n negentig kilometer benoorden Boekarest. De vraag naar de ouderdom is lastiger. Er is namelijk nauwelijks archeologische context. De helm is door een kind gevonden – in 1926? in 1927? in 1929? – en archeoloog Ioan Andrieșescu heeft op diens aanwijzingen de vindplaats geïdentificeerd, maar vond er alleen aardewerkfragmenten van tegen het einde van de Hallstatt-periode. Als het nou een koningsgraf was geweest, dan lagen er bijvoorbeeld munten of geïmporteerd Grieks aardewerk. Dat zou dateerbaar zijn geweest.
Waarmee we komen bij de vraag of de helm wel Dacisch is. De Assense tentoonstelling heet Dacia. Rijk van goud en zilver, maar dat is een tikje misleidend. De regio was vanouds bewoond door de Thracische groep die we aanduiden als Geten. Daar kwamen vanaf de zesde eeuw v.Chr. Skythen bij en in de vierde eeuw v.Chr. Kelten. De Hallstatt-cultuur kun je opvatten als voor- of vroeg-Keltisch. Dus we hebben een gouden helm uit een cultureel pluriforme regio met voor-Keltische of vroeg-Keltische invloeden. Scherper krijgen we het niet; vandaar de wat wisselende datering. Vandaar de vraag of het wel Dacisch is, want de Daciërs verschijnen pas later op het toneel.
In de vroege tweede eeuw v.Chr. voltrok zich in Centraal-Roemenië een proces van staatsvorming. De Keltische elite verdwijnt en een nieuwe elite ontstaat. Nu duikt ook het woord “Daciërs” op, voor zover ik weet voor het eerst bij Pompeius Trogus, die de Daciërs presenteert als afstammelingen van de Geten.noot Pompeius Trogus, Geschiedenis 32.4. De vraag of je de gouden helm van Coțofenești als Dacisch mag aanduiden, is dus gerechtvaardigd. Het voorwerp behoort bij een eerdere cultuurfase.noot Het museum in Assen gebruikt in de online-uitleg en op het expositiebordje het woord Dacisch dan ook niet.
Wat is het?
De hamvraag is natuurlijk wat het is. Welke Hallstatter heeft z’n gouden helm laten liggen? Of beter: helm van electrum, want het is geen zuiver goud, maar een alliage van goud en zilver.
De afbeeldingen passen in de “animal style”, de gedeelde kunst van zo’n beetje alle antieke volken tussen de Hongaarse poesta en Siberië. Van de Skythen tot de Avaren hebben edelsmeden roofdieren en dergelijke afgebeeld.
Sfinxen en gevleugelde griffioenenDat blijkt het duidelijkst op het achterhoofd van de gouden helm, waar we onderaan drie gevleugelde, paardachtige wezens zien, waarvan er twee een dierenpoot in de bek hebben. Daarboven zitten vier aapachtige, gevleugelde wezens. De onderste drie heten gewoonlijk griffioenen en de apen heten vier sfinxen, maar ik ben er niet zo zeker van of we met die namen de wezens niet te veel beschrijven met een Grieks vocabulaire en daardoor het eigene miskennen.
Het slachten van een ramOp de wangen zijn twee mannen afgebeeld die op het punt staan met een dolk een ram te doden. Men vergelijkt ze wel met de stierendodersscènes (tauroktonieën) uit de mysteriën van Mithras, maar (a) een stier is geen ram, (b) er zit een half millennium tussen deze soorten afbeeldingen, en (c) wie een ram slacht, doet het sowieso in deze houding. Dat heb ik althans in Iran zo gezien. Kortom, mithraïsche parallellen lijken me vergezocht.
De gouden helm van CoțofeneștiOp het voorhoofd van de helm zijn twee ogen afgebeeld. Zoiets geldt in de hele antieke Oudheid als kwaadafwerend: denk aan het oog op de boeg van een Fenicisch of Grieks schip, denk aan de turquoise amuletten van de Assyriërs, denk aan de blauwe kralen die je tegenwoordig in Griekenland en het Midden-Oosten ziet. Het kan natuurlijk ook zijn dat de drager van de helm wilde aangeven dat hij dubbel zo goed zag.
Boven de ogen zitten mooie noppen. De punt van de helm is verloren, zodat we niet weten of er nog iets bovenaan stond. Er zijn verder nog wat rozetten, driehoeken en spiralen: normale vlakvulling.
Eén ding is zeker: wie een kleine kilo goud op z’n hoofd kon dragen, was een voornaam persoon. Verder weten we niks. Het is een intrigerend voorwerp dat we wel kunnen beschrijven maar niet kunnen begrijpen. Was de drager een koning, een priester? Of iemand die als een ram gedood zou worden, waarna zijn ledematen voor de vogels werden geworpen? We hebben weer eens geen idee, het is immers oudheidkunde.
Vergunningen
Tot slot: ik las dat de directeur van het Nationaal Museum in Boekarest was ontslagen, omdat hij een bruikleencontract met het Drents Museum zou hebben gesloten zonder toestemming van de Roemeense regering.
Maar weet je: die helm is al jaren op weg. We hebben de helm van Coțofenești al in 2019/2020 in de Lage Landen gezien en in 2021 was het voorwerp in Madrid. Ik sluit allerminst uit dat het Roemeense ministerie van Cultuur toestemming heeft verleend voor de reizende expositie, en dat men, nu het opportuun is een Barbertje op te hangen, vindt dat voor elke expositie apart een vergunning gevraagd had moeten zijn.
Tot hier en niet verder. Overmorgen nog een gestolen helm, en nog meer Balkan.
