CW: What I’m reading; The Silence of the Girls
Have you read #TheSilenceOfTheGirls by #PatBarker? I’m only about 5 years late! I don’t know how I missed it, but saw the sequel in a ‘best of 2022’ round up (also now on my list)
I LOVED this - a feminist retelling of the Iliad, from the perspective of Briseis (Achilles’ ‘prize’ & ‘bed slave’)

CW: What I’m reading; Radical Attention
Another reason (perhaps) why I’ve been online less - #RadicalAttention by #JuliaBell
“In a world of infinite distraction, how can attention become radical?” - https://www.pagesofhackney.co.uk/webshop/product/radical-attention-julia-bell/
I was struck by the overlap between this & #MenWhoHateWomen - I hadn’t set out to read on a theme but I guess the tentacles of our toxic online world reach everywhere

CW: What I’m reading;Extreme Misogyny
I’ve had this book by #LauraBates on my teetering “to read” pile for over a year, but was spurred by #GretaThunberg taking down #AndrewTate, prompting a fresh round of discussion of #misogyny & the #manosphere
It’s a hard read but I’d recommend it if you want to better grasp the scale of the danger posed by #MenWhoHateWomen - especially if you have young boys in your life, whom you want to support to navigate the online world more safely

It can be hard being the only Scottish one in your family.
My husband is out in the garden with the kids, filming a “goal celebration” round for an extended family Christmas quiz. They’ve done Messi, Ronaldo, Peter Crouch’s robot…
And their finale? Gazza’s dentist’s chair from Euro 96.
I have refused to play the role of Colin Hendry 😆🏴😭⚽️

CW: UK Politics; nurses’ strikes
Can anyone discern a strategy from Barclay/ Govt on the nurses’ strikes?
The country LOVES nurses. Check out this BBC headline (and contrast with its rail strike coverage, where they tried to dredge up tragic stories of personal inconvenience, not all true)
So what’s the plan?

CW: UK Politics; PPE Medpro
“We do not comment on matters that are the subject of ongoing legal proceedings” says the Department of Health’s spokesperson, on the news that they’re suing PPE Medpro for breach of contract
How convenient

How convenient - should keep things quiet until after a General Election

CW: Birdsite; how to discuss news content on Mastodon
One thing I really valued about #Twitter is the ability to discuss news by quote tweeting trusted journalists/ news stories
I know QTs have a bad rep, but they did allow easy, quick discussion, because the salient points were already summarised in the quoted tweet
And I’m missing that, on here, if I’m honest. Do I just accept that time has gone? Become more considered; less impatient. Or am I overlooking something? 🤔

CW: UK Politics; Energy company freezing customers
Energy companies forcibly entering their customers’ houses and then leaving them to freeze - this is next level dystopia
I’m sure Ovo Energy are indeed “very sorry” - that Channel 4 News has exposed their scummy practices. But how many more households have they left in the cold?

CW: NZ Politics; Ardern getting caught on a hot mike
The fact that Jacinda Ardern’s apology was “I’m sorry because if I couldn’t say anything nice, I shouldn’t have said anything at all” rather than “you’re not an arrogant prick” - and the fact David Seymour thought that was fair enough - says it all really 😆
