  2. The Mad Frank's Dreams: Post 12 Blood, Wine, and Steel

    #FanFic #TheApothecaryDiaries
    #Wss366 Bread

Chue watched as Mao entered a room with a low table containing the remains of a meal and scattered flasks. There were no screens, curtains, or furniture in the room large enough to hide behind. Besides the table and a few cushions, the only outstanding feature was a painting in the style of the crucifixion depicted in their cell. This one was of a chalice brimming with light. Over it, the artist had written in sanguine letters, “As #bread and wine, share my flesh.”

“More like ‘blood and wine,’” Chue muttered eyeing the crimson runes.

With the sound of fighting so close, Chue decided they didn’t have time to find a better hiding spot. She moved into the shadows just inside the room’s door, where she could ambush anyone trying to enter.

“Pile the cushions in the corner. Hide in them,” she said, glancing at Mao, who was staring at the table.

Chue returned her focus to the passageway only to have it snap back to the apothecary when she heard Mao say to herself, “You’re a fool, but this is what I have to do.”

Mao bent, picked up a knife from the table, and turned toward the door. Her face was flushed with fever, but the look of grim determination stopped Chue from clicking her tongue.

“Don’t waste your time. I’ve decided,” Mao told her. The resolve in her voice matched her expression.

“Then stand behind me and keep your fangs sharp. I’ll be the bear and you the serpent. Strike fast, sly, and deadly.”

The two fell silent as the sound of fighting died and running footsteps approached.

First, The Mad Frank sped past, a look of terror on his face, then a shadow of a man wielding a sword appeared, creeping along the hallway. The bearer paused, then sprang into the room, weapon raised. Chue barely had time to raise her club to block the blow. The shock of the sword meeting the parry ran through her arm. The blade sliced through the wood, leaving only a stump in her hand.

“Steel!” Mao gasped seeing her mercenary guard about to decapitate Chue.

“Chue, Mao,” the skirmisher responded, her sword stopping barely in time.

“How…” Mao began. Then, overcome by fever, she slumped to the floor.

“Followed The Mad Frank,” Steel replied. She smiled, winked, and picked Mao up like a sack of rice.

Chue smiled back, thinking, “If only the prince were so bold.

  6. Crabby Crab

    #Fanfic #LagoonFire by @asakiyume
    #Vss366 Kid / #ChildrensDay #こどもの日

Old man Kaduik looked away from his tiles. The game had ground to a draw, and he was bored. He looked out over the park and smiled as he watched the school #kids playing. It was one of the pleasures of being a retired god. Being human wasn’t so bad. The kids were milling around in the shade of the trees, enjoying their break from school.

“What are you thinking?” Nakona asked, following his gaze.

“I was wondering what it would have been like if we had ever been kids: playing in the shallows, catching crabs, teasing the girls.”

“You would have been like that one over there,” she said, pointing to a boy chasing the girls. He was using his hands like pincers, shouting, “Crabby, crab! Crabby, crab!” and laughing when the girls squealed.

As suddenly as the game had started, it stopped with the boy leaning against a tree, panting in the heat.

“Hey, Tamlo,” the retired crab god yelled to the juice vendor. “Give that boy a drink. I’ll pay.”

“No can do, sir. We'd be reported for showing undue interest in him.”

“Then, I’ll buy them all drinks, and you’d better give me a good bulk discount.”

Ahead, light streamed through a honeysuckle-draped arch. The air was sweet with their scent, buzzing with the song of bees.

Hum,” I thought and then laughed at my pun. It looked as though there was a grassy clearing ahead. The sun would feel nice there. I could lie in the grass and eat the bread I’d bought at the last town. But wait, there was someone already there: a tall, handsome man standing next to a proud horse. The man’s elegant hunter’s outfit made it clear he was some kind of noble—“too bad.”

He looked up, smiling. “Have you come to see her too?”

“See who?” I asked and approached cautiously, peering through the grass to see what he was looking at.

There, in the middle of the clearing, was a crystal coffin. Inside was a woman wearing a brown peasant dress. Among the wilted remains of wildflowers that someone had placed on the lid was a bouquet of fresh roses.

“Isn’t she beautiful?” the man said. “I could stroke her hair all day.”

“Yes, it’s lovely,” I said. It was too: an amber-brown, lightened in streaks by the sun.

    “And you are?” I asked.

“I wouldn’t want the Queen to hear I came here, so you can just call me Prince Charming. Many people do.”

“So you visit often, Prince Charming?” My sarcasm went unnoticed. I had met nobles like him before. Their charm chiefly resided in the threat of violence. That and the power to wave away such aggression as the victim’s fault.

I hadn’t failed to notice the short silver hunting sword at his side.

“Yes, she is so lovely. How can I resist? I’ve named her Snow White. Doesn’t she deserve it?”

“She is quite lovely, Your Highness. But I hear that if you kiss a sleep enchanted woman, she will wake. Have you tried that?”

“I’ve heard the same, but youth’s beauty fades with time. The lovely bride of today is a wrinkled hag tomorrow. I will let her sleep so she never fades. A gem forever brilliant for me to view.”

The poppies and bluebells nodded in agreement; whether to my ironic thoughts or his statement, I didn’t know.

The honeysuckle odor had suddenly cloyed, and clouds cast shadows on the grass.

I smiled and departed. I could eat my lunch elsewhere.

  8. Prince Charming Part 1

    #FanFic WanderingWitch #SnowWhite
    #Wss366 Hedge / #GreeneryDay Japan

The day had started well. A gentle wind scented with verdant greenery stirred my hair. Bright violets bloomed along my path, mingling with yellow buttercups and brilliant orange poppies. Thrushes and titmice flitted in the #hedges. It was truly the kind of day where wandering the byways was a goddess-given blessing.

So wondrous was the day that I didn’t even mind the occasional burr that attached itself to my mage’s robes or the dense foliage that forced me to walk. The moss-covered path was easy on my feet. The occasional brook sang to me. Butterflies as bright as the star brooch of my profession delighted my eyes.

Who was this young woman so enamored with life?

It was me, Elaine the Wandering Witch.

    #Wss366 Pace

Chue picked a random direction and set off, listening all the while for signs of danger. Hampered by Mao’s condition, the #pace was slow. Things didn’t improve when Mao gathered herself together and said, “I can walk on my own,” pushing Chue away.

Mao received a dubious look, but her rescuer stepped away. This freed her hand to wield the cudgel if necessary. Against a well-armed foe, it would be useless, but it was all she had.

After only a few steps, Chue halted. “Listen!”

At first, the sound of clashing metal was faint but grew louder as they listened. A scream sounded, followed by the sound of running feet that stopped moments later with another crash of steel on steel.

“Hide!” Chue said, pointing to a side room. “I’ll hold them off.”

    Mao hesitated.

“The prince needs you, and the emperor needs the prince. Chue is nothing but a one-handed clown. Go!”

    ….

“Go! Don’t let Chue’s death be in vain!”

Fanfiction but Word count is 66,666.
Which assume was deliberate considering it was Fa fix from the show TV show #Lucifer. I consider it book length.

"Wing (From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)" six chapters which is kinda bonkers considering the word length but the Author Endnotes states that the story kinda got away from them a little - in a good way. Chapters get longer each time.
