  6. Just watched Mortal Kombat II with a buddy at the cinema. Had (sub?) zero expectations, did not see the one from a couple of years ago. But had a very good time. Pretty tongue-in-cheek, some memberberries, surprisingly passionate story unfolding (for these kinds of movies) and of course some very brutal scenes, but thankfully and surprisingly not nearly as many as I feared. So if you're open to a light pre-summer movie that will have you leaving the cinema with a grin and maybe some chuckles as you just had a good time, go for it. You don't have to be a die-hard MK fan - I most certainly am not.

  9. When I got my #C64 (used, from one of my mum's co-workers) it came with a #datasette and 4 or 5 60 minute tapes full of games (turbo tape format). With it came a printed list of what was on them.

As I didn't have a clue about any of them, I just played the first game that loaded from tape.

Here it is, the very first game I played on MY C64 [drumroll]:

    "Burnin Rubber"

It was bad enough to keep me entertained for a while ...

  10. Today I replaced the empty battery of my vintage #Roland #Juno106 #Synthesizer.

An empty battery in this old unit results in complete amnesia of all sound presets. (Unlike the #Ensoniq #ESQ1, that – at least with later firmwares – comes up with the factory presets in such an event, and then continues having dementia…)

The first time I had done so, I had installed a battery holder to make things easier. The original battery is soldered into the board.

Always fun is to restore the backup via the #tapeInterface with that #datassette sound.

I really love how the Juno 106 is constructed. Easy access if you know those 6 screws… it's a pretty well-made, all-solid device.

Today's Roland (and BOSS) gear feels like cheap plastic toys compared to this. I guess you have to go for an expensive #Sequential synth today if you want this quality.

The Juno 106 synthesizers were made from 1984 to 1988. My dad had bought this unit brand new when I was a kid.

  18. John Carmack (Doom, Quake, that virtual reality headset - you know the man) talks about AI, AGI and why training with classical Atari 2600 games is a great way for the ghost in the machine to learn. I did not expect this and thought that AI playing Atari was "done" (i.e.: solved, no need to look into that further) some years ago actually. But as it turns out: There is still more to it. Listen to his talk here, well worth your time if you are fascinated by AI and have a passion for Atari and vintage gaming in general.
