@dalias @DanielMicay @agwa @filippo @cynicalsecurity Because they've had to deal with it when it goes wrong. While #DNSSEC is tremendously clever and deals with a real issue, it's _incredibly_ brittle. That's even taking into account the near heroic efforts of the likes #KnotDNS to make the experience as straightforward as possible. It has a massive blast radius.

@Photo55 @dalias last info i have is that #wikimedia currently uses #varnishcache and #ats. they did use varnish only with two layers, but understandibly replaced the persistent varnish layer with ats, because the first persistent storage engine had design issues. now that we have SLASH/fellow, varnish could do the job well again.

It didn't replace van Smoorenberg init+rc. It replaced Upstart. The existence of Upstart is the part of history that many people forget or gloss over.
van Smoorenberg init+rc always was a straw man. The Debian committee included it, but everyone acknowledged at the time that the main contenders were systemd, Upstart, and OpenRC.

I understood Daniel J. Bernstein's avoidance of the Standard C library, especially strings and standard I/O which had been rife with pointer mis-uses for decades.
But this is not that.
Why on Earth would one continue to use stdio but roll one's own version of the GNU C library's FILE and DIR macros?

The #neoreactionary movement doesn’t seek to go back to 1955 or 1855, but rather 855.

Ryan I read your post from the USA #CrisisLine non-profit "industry" perspective. #CrisisTextLine's for-profit spin-off Loris .ai is an unfortunate classic example.

RE: https://hachyderm.io/@dalias/116578097693181353
I have to agree with this. The best most of the tech industry does is change things without making them worse. They don't make things that do new stuff, they don't improve the existing stuff, they just make it do things differently. Constantly keeping up with that and finding new workarounds for old problems that work for the new way it's done exhausts most people and makes their lives miserable. And that's the _best_ case.
Part of it's that sales & marketing reject the idea of "done".
