Just discovered the GGC coding community, here is their code forge:

#ShowerThoughts: the MVP for federated code forges is the ability to login to a new forge as a guest, using your account on your home forge. Obviously that would need to use something like OpenID that sends you back to your own forge to login, rather than expecting you to give your login credentials to the new forge. There would need to be a name and logo (ForgeFed?) that could sit alongside (or ideally replace) the 'login with GH/ GL' logos presently in use.

@MatejLach bring on @forgefed (or #sourcehut or #SaT or #GitSSB)! There are lots of projects working on a federated #CodeForge network, but there is a lot still to be done to get it all usable for anyone other than command line wizards. A good test project would be a docs forge, like #flossmanuals, but federated. If mere mortals can collaborate on docs using federated editing tools, they're ready for anyone to use.

I'm finally moving over to Radicle (https://radicle.xyz) instead of switching to another centralized code forge (like GitHub, GitLab, Codeberg, etc.). I definitely love the idea behind a #P2P code forge and I'm hopeful for Radicle's future, but I do have some reservations starting off:
1) Despite talking a lot about freedom and privacy in the tutorial, the group building Radicle (https://radworks.org/) is planning to sell hosting and make a profit via an Ethereum-based cryptocurrency (https://www.tally.xyz/gov/radworks) as well as NFTs and smart contracts. Some big Libertarian red flags there.
2) At some point there was a Swiss nonprofit "Radicle Foundation", but this now seems to be a for-profit venture (see https://radicle.xyz/history). I wish it could just be a nonprofit.
3) In the user guide chapter on private repos (https://radicle.xyz/guides/user), it says that I need to use a public DNS address trusted seed node to share the repo. I understand there's no DHT here, but I hope it's not too much of a pain to run this over my local network instead of the internet. (And yeah, I know I can use git locally, I just want to test Radicle locally.)
Overall, I think that if radworks turns out to be evil it will be a way easier transition to fork Radicle than it has been to leave GitHub, but I still wish I didn't have to worry.

Aaaaand it's gone.
#Gitlab will probably *not* be doing any kind of federated merge requests any time soon.
After not caring about it for a couple of years, then closing it, THEN receiving massive amounts of comments about it they re-opened this topic four months ago[1].
And now they closed a different, related epic about the topic[2].
Overall: Gitlab is not something I want to rely on.

@ayo did you come across #radicle yet? Looks really intriguing. They did a lot of R&D, seem to have nailed the #protocols now. I'm going to try it for my next #opensource project

Does anyone have a #Forgejo or #OneDev instance they'd be willing to let me and my team join? I need a general-purpose #CodeForge, but the treehouse.systems mail server appears to be down, so people can't verify their account to join me.
I like to start my projects privately and only open-source them when they're ready. And I'm currently working on a modding project that would be illegal to make the source code public for. So Codeberg is out of the question for me for most projects.

Just found out about #gitops with #elixir called #pluralsh.
Going to have to check it out. Though downside is they only have support for #github and #gitlab. ⚰️ Neither which I use for my personal #codeforge. However! They plan to support #mercurial! 🤯 That alone makes the software worth a glance or three for me. 😭

On the subject of the ongoing enshittification of GritHub, we've been here before. From a post on my #Disintermedia blog in its early days;
"SF.net has since reimplemented its stack in Python, beginning in 2009 as a new free code project called Allura under the Apache 2.0 license, and in June 2011, a piece was posted on the SourceForge blog which finished off, 'pull up a chair, because we’re here to stay'."
